We created gyms because modern day work no
longer required physical activity. Without exercise,
our muscles atrophy.
I predict we'll need gyms for our brains too, once Al
starts doing our knowledge work.

Just found out that one of my all-time favorite short films is available to stream/rent! (It's been on Kanopy for a while, but my library system uses Hoopla.) Deborah Stratman's LAST THINGS is speculative nonfiction about the end of time from the perspective of rocks.

“Fight Club,” the May 7, 2000 episode of The X-Files, featuring red & blue color-coded, kayfabe doppelgangers printing money & causing fights seems weirdly prescient. Especially considering the red state / blue state convention hadn’t solidified until the presidential election later that same year.

"The dvlpmt of co-ops around the world is another story that should not end too abruptly. We cld still be weaving it today... The struggle against big tech can have two stories in one: the vibrant resistance + refusal, but also the effort to build a better economy under workers’ and users’ control."

"I wish the recent tellings of the Luddite mvmt wld... let their story go on a bit longer. By 1820, the Luddites had been crushed... But by that time weavers were already pursuing a quieter strategy. They formed [co-ops]... Thru them, weavers went from working in factories to co-owning factories."

His response to AI is less a thoughtful take on technology than it is about how impressionable Lucas is and how little he cares about actual craft.

I once met a master carpenter who helped build Skywalker Ranch. He told me a story about how an entire section of his intricate hand carved woodwork was painted over white because Lucas had showed it to a friend who complained about it being too dark.

“Commission on Departmental Efficiency” instead would have given you CODE. Not only a more aggressive swipe at the DOGE tech bros, but a simultaneous reference to both regulatory standards and moral/ethical conduct.
