G'morning #WIPSnips! Part of Milly's job interview segment, a detail she quickly dismisses as impossible and is explained away by Irena shortly after this. #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts
A knock at the door Interrupts Irena mid-sentence. Her eyes dart to it.
“Please excuse me, I have to see to this. I’ll only be a moment,” she says and jumps out of her chair, marching towards the door with speed. The wind she makes as she does so pulls something out of the bookcase behind her, which flutters down to the carpeted floor behind the desk. She quickly opens the office door and slips outside, closing it behind her. I can hear people speaking outside, so I stand up to see what fell on the floor.
A white plastic square with writing in old, faded blue marker, spelling out ‘Remember’. I turn it around, and it’s an old polaroid picture, but a picture taken of an even older black and white photograph. I squint at the small details on it. Evidently the picture was taken of a much larger one. I really have to squint to make out the details. People are standing around in a forested area looking shocked. There’s what looks like a short stretch of cliff wall slicing out of the hill in the background, and the large black opening of a cave in the middle of it.
The most prominent detail on the picture, though, is the group of people front and center. Two men, who look to be brothers, are holding a third person up between them on their shoulders. The figure is filthy and covered in scratches and bruises. What little clothing they have seems to be made up of vegetation and animal skins, and it’s long hair, white in the picture, is horribly matted and filled with twigs. The face that pokes out from between all of this mess is of course black and white like the rest of it, and it’s dirty and smeared with god knows what, but the resemblance is unmistakable. It’s Irena.

Today is the birthday I picked for Lady Elizabeth Hartweald! She's 16 in 1660. Alexander develops a crush on her, which she thinks is whatever—she's mostly just glad to have a male friend who will do shit. She's off-page but mentioned in 1661, then comes back in 1662 as a major character.
Astrological birth chart generated by AstroDienst with art of Lady Elizabeth on top. She's a slightly chubby aristocratic girl in 1660s garb: a pink back-closing pair of bodies (bodice) with a very low point in front and short pink sleeves slashed to show the chemise underneath, plus a white silk petticoat with gold embroidery to match gold embroidery on the bodies. Her neckline is very wide and low, but a sheer white scarf covers up her chest. She's carrying a painted Japanese-style fan and wears a pearl necklace, and tawny-gold shoes with a much narrower toe than the men's style just peek out from underneath her skirts. Her auburn hair is up in a sort of spaniel-ear, horizontally extended side-bun style with numerous ringlets hanging down.

There's also a doodled headshot, chibi-style, emphasizing long eyelashes and pink cheeks, in which she smiles blandly.

Her chart features things like a Sun in Libra (Scorpio cusp), Moon and Mars in Cancer, Mercury in Scorpio, Venus in Virgo, Ascendant Virgo, Sun square Moon, Moon trine Mercury, Mercury opposition Jupiter, Sun trine Mars, Venus trine Jupiter.

We need suits.” Pat declared to a well-dressed man loitering behind an expensive-looking off-white marble counter. The man looked both of them up and down, Pat in her plaid button up and tan Carhartt’s and Phaedra in an oversized Hole t-shirt, going on its third day since seeing a washing machine. The faded blue-jeans with torn out knees added that last touch of je ne sais quoi.
“Yes, you do,” he said drily.

#WIPSnips | Pulse Took a bit of a break, but I’m back with this scary snippet of Askel with his latest prey from Raw cw violence
The scent of blood hit Askel’s nose, and he found himself staring face to face with terrified prey.

Baring his fangs, he dug right into the merchant’s jugular.

When the merchant tried to scream, Askel grabbed his jaw. Silence. Silence him so that he could feed. And feed he did.

Askel never let a single drop of blood go to waste. He sank his teeth deeper into tender flesh. Drafts of blood were gulped down in time with a fading pulse. He crushed the man’s jaw, forgetting that he was still gripping down on it.

Wesley waited till he could no longer see them through the trees before making his way to the horses. He did not have to search. The key drew his hand like a magnet. He and it were the same, forged from iron, bent and beaten under intense heat into the best shape to serve their master. The lock that formed his breastbone ached and pulsed with an urgency that was almost like having a heartbeat.

Nothing too exciting for today, just a short part of the cleansing ceremony. From CultWIP first draft. TW for self-mutilation and blood #WIPSnips #writingcommunity #writesky #writingprompts
Blood trickled from the freshly opened wound on Rowan's pale arm, dripping from his fingers onto the altar where so many others had already spilled their own. He hesitated as he watched the slow, steady pulse of crimson continue to well up and trace its manic path across his skin, the golden blade that he had used to slice still poised and hovering in the air just inches from his arm. The edge was not as sharp as it usually was, requiring much more force now to cut open skin, but it had almost made it through yet another cleansing ceremony. There were still dozens more people behind him in line, practically tripping over themselves with elation at the prospect of atonement.

Someone cleared their throat. “Rowan?”

High Priest Silas stood before him, his hand outstretched and his ancient face betraying his impatience. On either side of him stood Mother Superior Sera and Warrior Priest Corvin, as well as their chosen acolytes, who held burning candles in their hands and kneeled with their heads bowed in prayer. Behind High Priest Silas, a bronze idol of Rekshimyr stood tall, nearly brushing the ceiling. The low light of the room cast sinister shadows across his sharp, birdlike face.

#WIPSnips Yana's first impression of the warmech Tragoedia, our resident neon-punk-rock-lesbian-biker-hunter-killer-drone.
Behind him, an Artificial herded a half curled-up Xyd towards the display-lined walls. Yana recognized the general design—this was a warmech, a memory older and more shameful than even Six's gynoid body, lanky and sharp-angled, with long, free-rotating limbs and a digitigrade lower body. A hunter-killer drone, one of legions once deployed to enact their programming with cold cruelty, with bladed claws atop skeletal limbs, chrome and glistening, designed not for efficiency, but for terror. But even Yana could tell this was not the lifeless shell she'd seen in the museum displays. Cables and fiber optic wires aglow in a hundred dissonant colors were cast about it in the semblance of armor, and atop its surprisingly humanoid skull rested a light fixture in the shape of a mohawk, pulsing blood-red and neon blue at seizure-inducing speeds.

Isabelle and Jason got too good at playing Ping-Pong by the normal rules, so they invented a slightly more chaotique version. #WIPSnips #WritingCommunity #cousin
Screenshot of the following novel excerpt:
Jason stops at the ping-pong table and picks up a paddle, memorizing the way it feels in his hand, reenacting past swings. It’s the one with burn marks from when their cousin Virginia once put it down on a hot grill. He picks up a yellow ball. “Wanna play one more game before the world-ending storm hits?”
Isabelle picks up an orange ball and a paddle of her own. “Our way?”
Jason nods.
They serve at the same time.
Isabelle sends the orange ball towards the opposite side of the room; Jason sends the yellow ball towards the ceiling. Isabelle leaps to intercept the yellow ball before it hits the floor; Jason runs to hit the orange ball once it rolls down all the rungs of a ladder. Isabelle then bounces the orange ball off the backhoe while Jason returns the yellow one. The orange one rolls off Jason’s head and behind a crate of Halloween decorations. The yellow one brushes Nasrin’s cheek as she walks through the door. She catches it.
“That doesn’t count as a drop!” Isabelle says.
“It totally does!” Jason yells while trying to maneuver behind the crate.
Isabelle can already hear the bouncing stop. “That does! Un punto para mí.” She takes the yellow ball from Nasrin and serves it again. In so doing she knocks the chainsaw off the wall. The sudden thump causes Jason to knock over the Halloween decorations and break a glass pumpkin.
Jason cringes. “On the bright side, no one’ll see the mess if a hurricane blows it all way.”
Isabelle lowers her paddle and looks at him with disappointment. “I still think we better play normal for a while.”

Fulfilling her oaths usually IS Aisling’s goal. She wouldn’t knowingly swear oaths that contradicted each other and she bows to no set of "rules" but those defined by her own oaths. This may make her results-based on a technicality, but the desired results are entrenched in her honor system.

You should read my books. Because they good. *marketing* books.bookfunnel.com/TippingWorld...
The covers of 3 books each showing a shadowy figure with a sword in a dramatic landscape, all by MC Burnell: A Path of Endless Crossroads, The Bull at the Start, The King of Ill-Omens.

Enter the legend...
The Tipping World
books 1-3 on all platforms.Premise: When a group of incomparable warriors goes missing, the likeliest explanation is they were betrayed. The quest to find the traitor will lead the survivors through discord, then war. Then terrifying truths about their history and their powers that tear down everything they believed about themselves.

The Basics: A society of warrior-mages sworn to serve all peoples, forbidden love, family, even independent thought. They're used to thinking of themselves as invulnerable, not to mention heroes, but when one of their own turns on them and sets the continent ablaze, all bets are off. Each of them has to decide for themselves what they want and how they'll stay alive to get it.

Elements: convoluted intrigue/ ubiquitous, immersive sensory magic/ new heroes-in-training + their jaded, ancient mentors/ shatter reality/ emotion is forbidden/ swordplay/ history is a lie.“The mage had a response to her skepticism, a pretty compelling one: she need not take him at his word, he was offering her the chance to learn the truth. Provided the process of learning what was true and what was not, what was real and what was myth, wasn’t a trap. One that would ensnare her and remake her into precisely what the mage said mages weren’t. All she had to do was take him at his word.”
A PATH OF ENDLESS CROSSROADS

“They had once believed that all the evils they were asked to commit would be worth it if they could change the world, and it didn’t even matter whether that was true because the only way in which the world had changed was that it was now much more full of evil thanks to them.”
TALLY THE BETRAYERS

“Dyafer had seen something flowing up the hill but not Seen it, and the explanation for this disconnect was obvious: she had imagined it, as one often did with monsters in the dark when one was scared. Because she was a mage, what she imagined became real.”
UNDER A SIGN OF BUTTERFLIESThe covers of 6 books by MC Burnell: A Mirror with an Edge, The Hour of the Day, Tally the Betrayers, Under a Sign of Butterflies, Bells Begin to Ring, Symbols' End.

THE LEGEND CONCLUDES

So your dead wife's soul is evidently trapped in a magic tree and you've decided your best option is to merge yourself with that tree; now you have to re-figure-out your body. I thought I talked about petals in this scene, but turned out I used "blossoms" instead. #WIPSnips #WritingCommunity #petal
Screenshot of the following novel excerpt:
Silk scarves must feel basically the same way when they unravel as Nasrin feels soaking into the Tree. Every fiber stretches out, bits disconnect, but they stay rooted to larger scraps that hold together. Her frayed ends start to feel more like tentacles streaming from a malleable nucleus. She flexes her tentacles in circumspect undulations, reaching out and pulling in. Everything tastes and smells like a wooden stirrer soaked in sweet tea. She constantly hears a pestle running along the rim of a chiming bowl.
Through closed eyelids he sees light as if looking up at the noonday sun. Her eyes sting when she opens them. Squinting helps. She sees nothing but green static at first. Blinking brings more distinct shapes into focus. She stands inside a wooden tower, looking up from the base of a spiral staircase leading up to story upon story of platforms on which stand unfamiliar people dress in choir robes. Her body clips into the floor at her hips. From there down she senses that her body splits into a network of kraken-esque appendages reaching through the walls to the Tree’s roots and limbs.
At her tentacle tips she can feel narrow passages where leaves, blossoms, and fruit sprout out of the tree limbs. With tooth-grating effort she can squeeze into the twigs. Reaching the leaves drastically increases the floral tea taste, like the leaves are steeping in her skin. The blossoms taste more like amaretto. She doesn’t find the fruit right away. She knows when she finally does because the honey flavor overwhelms everything else. She also knows because at the same moment a sapphire sea serpent swims down from the tower’s rafters to circle her.

Think I've used parts of this snip before, but it's still fun. #WIPSnips #WritingCommunity #dent
Screenshot of the following novel excerpt:
Something literally flashes in Nasrin’s eyes. The monocle she wears sends the ray of the flash out like a laser. The flames perpetually flickering in her DNA flare, and if she doesn’t chill out soon her entire body might erupt. Her hair’s already dancing in an unnatural, fire-like fashion. Thankfully the wind coming off the nearby Gulf of Mexico makes it harder to notice.
“You should’ve dressed plain like we did,” says Jason. “No one else would even think of coming here in costume.”
Nasrin spins to face him, sending her jacket on its most dramatic twirl yet. “This is not a costume,” she says through clenched teeth. Her voice gains a faint echo as she gets more worked up, as if three of her speak at once. “This is the actual outfit I wore as a ship’s captain in the 1700s.”
Jason examines the dents left in his ankle by a sand-spur. “See, we know you’re immortal, but if anyone else hears ya say that you’re gonna get locked up.”
“Ha!”
Moments like this make Isabelle wonder whether it’s really wise to hang out with, let alone live with, someone like Nasrin. She directs her gaze at Nasrin’s shadow. She still gets a chill from it. Just for something to say, she asks, “You enjoyed the re-enactment, though, right?”
Nasrin’s eyes actually do combust at that, if only briefly. Her monocle melts.
