Proud Canadian 🇨🇦🍁. Cloverdale, BC resident since 2001. Fighting for a more equitable and compassionate society. The climate crisis is real. End fossil fuel consumption now if we expect to leave a livable planet to future generations.

Why are Indigenous people now being subjected to levels of overt hostility and racism unseen in decades? One chief recently told me he was denied entry into a store for being “Indian”.

Not to mention that despite the name, LNG Canada is 100% foreign owned so profits will largely leave the country while Canadians will be left holding the bag if the Institute for Energy Economics & Financial Analysis is right and long-term demand for LNG in Asia fails to materialize. #cdnpoli

Statement from Emily
Lowan on
LNG Canada Phase 2
Laklaran [LEKWUNGEN] TERRITORY / VICTORIA, B.C. — "I'm deeply disappointed to see LNG Canada Phase 2 move ahead with the Final Investment Decision - and to see both the BC NDP, Conservatives all applaud this move, while committing to further expansion of oil and gas throughout our province.
LNG Canada is an entirely foreign-owned project. It is owned by Shell, one of the most profitable companies in history, several foreign state-owned oil companies, and US private equity. LNG Canada's owners also own the fracking operations in the Peace that feed the project. The profits from LNG development flow directly to shareholders and governments abroad, while the costs stay here. Families in Kitimat and Terrace are already living with the health effects: dirtier air, rising asthma rates, and rogue flares lighting up the sky. And for all the public money and all the risk, Phase 2 will create a maximum of 150 permanent jobs.
These are nation-draining projects, and the BC Greens oppose taxpayer handouts to foreign investors. Every public dollar we pour into them digs us a deeper hole. That money should be building Canadian-owned industries that move our economy up the value chain.wildfire-filled summers, and projects that never pay off. The BC Greens will put that money to work here instead - building out renewable energy, backed by good union jobs that don't disappear the moment a foreign shareholder changes their mind.
Power that's owned by our communities, not leased from a pipeline. Energy that brings our bills down instead of tying them to a roller coaster gas price.
On the eve of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, my heart goes out to all the Indigenous nations that have opposed this project, were never consulted, and have been standing up to protect their lands. Reconciliation cannot be a slogan we wear one day a year while governments push through projects over the objections of the people whose lands they cross. It has to mean respecting the right to say no.
This election, British Columbians can choose a government still betting on the last fifty years - or one building the next fifty. It's time to believe in better."

Prime Minister, as your government focuses on building a stronger Canadian economy, I urge you to look at Norway’s fiscal regime for oil and gas. Raising the tax share on resource profits ensures public wealth stays in Canada to benefit citizens, rather than flowing out to international shareholders

There's a reason previous Liberal governments looked at privatizing airports and didn't go through with it. Private investors don't want a stake in our public assets to make them better. They’re in it to make as much money as possible for themselves - while workers and passengers pay the price.

Carney is a master of spin and, unfortunately, the Canadian public is buying it. Canada is in a very weak position due to our trade war with the States and big money knows it. They are like sharks circling a sinking ship ready to devour whatever floats their way. Carney is selling us out.

Every dollar spent on climate preparedness saves $13 in disaster related costs. British Columbians just saw $531M less in LNG royalties than promised from the BC NDP’s budget, and $614M more than expected on wildfires. Why should our tax dollars keep propping up LNG?
