the truly crazy making part of all of this is that voter fraud EFFECTIVELY DOES NOT EXIST. you have a better chance of finding an actual leprechaun at the end of the rainbow than of finding evidence of voter fraud that influences an election

This piece by Colson Whitehead is one of my favorite things ever written. I've shared it many times with folks over the years. It was published two months after 9/11, and I believe it's one of the greatest things ever put to pen about grief, memory, and time. www.nytimes.com/2001/11/11/m...
I started building my New York on the uptown No. 1 train. My first city memory is of looking out a subway window as the train erupted from the tunnel on the way to 125th Street and palsied up onto the elevated tracks. It's the early 70's, so everything is filthy. Which means everything is still filthy, because that is my city and I'm sticking to it. I still call it the Pan Am Building, not out of affectation, but because that's what it is. For that new transplant from Des Moines, who is starting her first week of work at a Park Avenue South insurance firm, that colossus squatting over Grand Central is the Met Life Building, and for her it always will be. She is wrong, of course -- when I look up there, I clearly see the gigantic letters spelling out Pan Am, don't I? And of course I am wrong, in the eyes of the old-timers who maintain the myth that there was a time before Pan Am.

‘This guy is going to destroy civilization as we know it, and the earth, and all because of these people who don't have any idea why they're alive.’ - Michael Shannon in 2016 predicting the hell we’re in now 10 years later www.rogerebert.com/interviews/y...
Can you make sense of any of that for me? How Trump was elected?
Yeah, I'll tell you how to make sense of it: This country's filled with ignorant jackasses. The big red dildo running through the middle of our country needs to be annexed to be its own country of moronic assholes. You can call it the United States of Moronic Fucking Assholes.
Do you think those assholes started off that way, or that people are inherently good and lost?
I don't know how people got so goddamn stupid. But it's really weird, because it's like the last eight years, now it feels like a lie.
Like, this is has been festering underneath the whole time.
Racists, sexists. And a lot of these people, they don't know why the fuck they're alive. They know it. They're doing drugs, fucking killing themselves. Because they're like, 'Why the fuck am I alive? I can't get a job, I don't know anything about anything, I have no curiosity for life or the world. So this Trump thing is like getting a box of firecrackers, or something.
It's like, 'Well, this will be fun for a little while, this'll kill some time.' Because, y'know, the jackass will be amusing on television, stay stupid shit. Make everybody clap. Hillary would have been too boring, I suppose. It's the worst thing that's ever happened. It's the worst. This guy is going to destroy civilization as we know it, and the earth, and all because of these people who don't have any idea why they re alive.
