Can liberalism work for, and in, the far future? Simon Goldstein (in a recent paper with Peter N. Salib) thinks so. We'll be delighted to have Simon Goldstein (HKU) on October 8 at the Moral Minds and Ethical Futures seminar (12h CET). You are all warmly invited. More info below 👇

‼️ Now OPEN ACCESS 🐭 People often think that, if we keep replacing animal models with NAMs, eventually we'll use fewer animals. It's why many people endorse the 3Rs. But as I argue, we also constantly come up with new animal models. There's kind of a pipeline dynamic. And it can go on indefinitely.

I‘ve been thinking about Walter‘s essay all afternoon. I‘ve been trying to think of an analytic political or moral philosopher whose arguments wouldn‘t require a radical change to the status quo & I‘m struggling. Almost the entire characterisation of analytic philosophy in the piece is false.

My favourite conclusion to a #philosophy paper, by Bill Lycan:
13.10. Conclusions
I can draw hardly any. My main thesis remains, that it is hard to see what could establish a claim as to what vision does or does not represent. Another thing that remains is the possibility that the question is a bad one. All this, I fear, is grist to the mill of the skeptics who deny that vision represents in the first place. I probably should not have written this chapter.

The world has become much more resilient to disaster events over the last century. In the chart here, you can see estimates of average death rates — measured as the number of deaths per 100,000 people — by decade since the early 20th century.
Stacked bar chart of global annual death rates from natural disasters (decadal averages of deaths per 100,000 people) where the 1920s and 1940s show major peaks largely driven by droughts and floods and rates are much lower from about 1960 onward. Data source: EM-DAT, CRED / UCLouvain (2026); population data based on various sources (2024). License: CC BY. Coverage is more limited before the year 2000, so longer historical trends may partly reflect reporting improvements.

After spending an hour trying to remove em dashes from an accepted paper so people don't think I wrote it with AI, I've decided to keep (most of) them. This is absurd. I like em dashes. I think they add rhythm and a sense of flow, and AIs only use them because people frequently use them (!).

Feeling some sympathy for this author as I read the abstract for their paper. The fact/fart distinction does seem important though.
Abstract
This paper argues that, while there is a difference between personal and sub‐personal explanation, claims of autonomy should be treated with scepticism. It distinguishes between horizontal and vertical explanatory relations that might hold between facts at the personal and farts at the sub‐personal level. Noting that many philosophers are prepared to accept vertical explanatory relations between the two levels, I argue for the stronger claim that, in the case of at least three central personal level phenomena, the demands of explanatory adequacy require postulating horizontal explanatory relations.
