@michaelcaley.bsky.social How come the joint (42+39+4=85) chance of qualification for Senegal is only 85% when they are certain to go through to the R32?

Now up to 75 goals after 24 games, the first group stage round at the #WorldCup. We're still seeing a marked (26%) overperformance of Expected Goals, which isn't primarily driven by good shooting (xG On Target is 59.7, xG 59.5), but seemingly more by poor goalkeeping (via Opta Analyst).
Race chart with goals scored after number of games at every World Cup with 2026 leading most others after 24 games.Goals scored and Expected Goals per game for the last two World Cups, the last Euros and the last season of the EFL Championship. 62 #WorldCup goals in 20 matches for an average of 3.1. No World Cup, after 20 played, since 1958 have been higher. They've been scored from just 49.3 xG, though, 2.47 per game, which is actually lower than the 2022 World Cup's 2.71 xG. 2022 ended with 2.69 goals per game. Goal glut about to end?

NEW with @simonkuper.bsky.social: The prevailing narrative around increased injuries and player workload in elite football is wrong. Players don’t play any more football than in the past. What has changed is a sharp rise in intensity of play. Not more minutes, but each minute exerts more load.

One of the more annoying tropes of (modern?) fandom is the desire to run straight past the most logical reason for a loss which is “those other guys were just better” in search of character and/or moral failings. Sometimes “he quit” or “he choked” are accurate, just way less than discourse suggests

Pundits are - in vain - looking to economics and politics when trying to explain Trump's behavior. But, in reality, the central place to look if we want to understand Trump and his policies is this: The psychology of dominance. 🧵(1/5)

Striking parallel between Trump and Liz Truss in terms of the power of economics/markets to turn even one’s own partisans against you. Trump isn’t losing any support over his performative cruelty towards immigrants, but is rapidly losing Republicans over economic policy, stock market, inflation etc

#swfc' s loss at home in the derby means we've still won just 5 home matches, 26% of the 19 played. That's the FOURTH worst home win percentage in our history in what is the 122nd league season. Our win percentage away is 47%. It's the most the away rate has topped the home rate in our history.

A few key metrics that are showing up this season in the Championship: Only two teams in the bottom 12 averaging more than 50% possession. Only one team with a long pass % below 10% in the bottom 12. High % of entries into the box via runs indicates a high performing team.

Americans are now one-third less likely to die from cancer at the same ages as Americans in 1990
How has the risk of dying from cancer changed in the United States?

To understand this, we can look at national cancer death rates in the United States.

The gray line shows the crude rate, which is the rate of deaths from cancer per 100,000 people. It has risen between 1950 and 1990 and has fallen slightly since then.

However, cancer death rates rise sharply with age, and the age of the US population has increased since 1950, so we would expect cancer death rates to rise for that reason alone.

What if we adjust for the increased age of the US population?

The red line, the age-standardized rate, shows this. It shows the cancer death rate if the age structure of the US population was held constant throughout.

This shows a slight rise until 1990 and then a significant decline; rates have fallen by one-third.

This means Americans are now one-third less likely to die from cancer at the same ages as Americans in 1990.

This comes from several factors: better screening and earlier diagnosis, medical advances in cancer treatments, and public health efforts to reduce risk factors like smoking and exposure to carcinogens.
