I'm here for the docs, the death metal and the donuts. Actually, I'm not here for the donuts, but the alliteration was hard to pass up. Geographically confused. Current: Athens, Write the Docs. Ex: Berlin, Portugal, UK, Travis CI, Buildkite, etc

This made a lot of sense to me. > The situations where the use of AI tends to land jarringly, causing frustration, rage, even a sense of betrayal, are the ones where the value of the communication is less abstract, and more personal or relational.

Hailz to 80s extreme metal: a thread The 1980s are recognized as the beginning of black metal and death metal, and while a lot of the most iconic records in those genres came out in the 90s, there are many gems worth hearing from the 80s. We’ll also talk about the extreme thrash of that era too

I'm very impressed that the top reply after that is along the lines of "well I've read your book twice, and your other stuff, and here's why you're wrong about your book." www.reddit.com/r/accelerate...
"Respectfully - I've also been thinking about AI and related topics for about the same amount of time - ever since I saw and read 2001 by Clarke. I've read Accelerando *twice* along with your other works with Cory Doctorow. As for the tone of my commentary, I just find unrelenting pessimism about the future distressing. That's just one of my many personal failings. I understand how your portrayal of "Economics 2.0" plays into the darker outcomes for humanity in Accelerando, but I don't always take my fiction so seriously - especially when we're speculating about a post-singularity future which is by its nature entirely unpredictable. This is why I've never given a lot of weight to apocalyptic visions in literature and film.

Where I disagree with you:

* I believe modern AI systems **are** intelligent. Even if I'm wrong and they're not, I still believe that modern AI is the pathway to tomorrow's intelligent systems and for that reason I'm fully in favor of their continued development and use.
* I do not believe that AI company leadership consists of a monolithic pack of grifters. Individuals are allowed to form their own attitudes and policies and I'm not so pessimistic or paranoid as to believe that they're all working in some kind of fascist, conspiratorial lock-step. Even tech executives can be well-intentioned sometimes.
* On topics like AI I defer to subject matter experts like Blaise Aguera y Arcas, Peter Norvig, Ilya Sutskever, Geoff Hinton and Demis Hassabis. None of whom would fit into the "grifter" category in my estimation.

Where I agree with you:

* I'm also very left-leaning politically. I realize that makes me a pro-AI oddball in the modern world.
* I wish I'd known Iain Banks. He sounds like a very cool guy.

*I still stand by what I said about Red Shirts.*"

Cities dismantled their tram networks to become “motor cities of the future”. The result? You could travel further within 30 mins via public transport in 1957 than you can in 2026. Cities are seeking billions to rebuild networks. Incredible piece of work this.
