OMB's focus on NIH and NSF, which has confused a lot of folks, pretty much boils down to stopping money going to universities.

There was a bloom of stories maybe ten years ago about older professors creating problems for the job market by not retiring, and just checking in now to point out that they’ve since retired and almost none of their jobs continue to exist.

The safety profile of the vaccines does not rest on a single FDA algorithm. The BMJ article raises questions: could some signals have been detected earlier? That's worth asking. The surveillance method had flaws; the conclusion is not that the vaccines were unsafe. 6/6

US policymakers must avoid the temptation to rebuild US science by mimicking China and going all in on STEM. That would be a mistake. We also need social science and humanities that makes sense of great technological change like AI. Thats part of US scientific tradition worth keeping.
For example, Henry Farrell argues that the social sciences arose from and are designed to make sense of moments of great social upheaval, which is exactly the moment AI is creating right now. Focusing only on investing in AI technology, without understanding the deeper implications of the changes it brings, would be a deep failure of science.

Farrell quotes Alondra Nelson, who has been thinking carefully about the impacts of AI for years:

AI is not an external force acting upon society from outside but an internal phenomenon constituted through social processes, institutional choices, market dynamics, and political struggles. Its effects are neither uniform nor preordained. They vary with context, design, and the distribution of power that determines how these technologies are built, deployed, and contested.

I don't need to say this, but it's obvious to me: this dramatic drop can be laid at the feet of the Trump Administration. The impacts, I predict, will be dramatic, bad and only visible 5 to 10 years from now at the earliest.* *it's falsifiable, but quite a ways from now

If the right wing can bully you into taking a position for cynical reasons how can you be trusted more generally? It’s fundamentally a power dynamic less about winning votes and being savvy and more about weakly conceding ground to your opposition.

Righteously argued essay here. Triangulation also demonstrates a fundamental lack of conviction and sincerity — once you do it you can’t get that credibility back with attentive voters.

There were many ways in which the US and its allies could have responded to the horror of 9/11. But by building extreme security states, launching pointless forever wars and restricting domestic dissent, successive governments inflicted more harm on their nations than the terrorists could have done.

a lot of people want to believe that right-wing beliefs are rooted in some legitimate material grievance. that makes it easier to imagine that if we simply solved the material problem, they’d deradicalize. but they won’t, because they aren’t disillusioned, they’re just morons.
