Paul Iutzi @pji.bsky.social · 24/09/2026Sure, it's not predictable. There are non-deterministic processes used in the training and in the generation. You don't expect them to be predictable. 000
Paul Iutzi @pji.bsky.social · 24/09/2026Chain calls together supplemented by skills, and it seems intuitive that you'll get something that looks like deliberation if you watch the flow through the chain. 100
Paul Iutzi @pji.bsky.social · 24/09/2026What is unexpected about how these act? You use back propagation and the entire corpus of written communication to adjust a trillion parameter model, I don't find it surprising that you get sensible output when providing natural human language input. 100
Paul Iutzi @pji.bsky.social · 24/09/2026Part of the reason it doesn't feel that way to me could be that I spent a lot of time implementing noise generation algorithms that could be layered constructively for generative art before diving into building a GPT. It's not the same thing, but it's not miles off either. 010

Paul Iutzi @pji.bsky.social · 24/09/2026Sure, the process for improving the model is incremental and massively iterative, but that's not new. It's how you create a model experimentally when attempts to create a model theoretically have failed. 100
Paul Iutzi @pji.bsky.social · 24/09/2026That trillion parameter deep model is just a giant equation. You don't grow them. You use best-fitting techniques to tweak the constants in the equation to get the model to provide the desired output for the given input. 200
Paul Iutzi @pji.bsky.social · 24/09/2026That doesn't mean it's wrong to analogize what they do with the human mind. It's also not new. We talk about conditional statements as making decisions all the time. Game AIs have been described as thinking for as long as they've been around. 010
Paul Iutzi @pji.bsky.social · 24/09/2026They are regular programs. The Python I write to create a GPT isn't categorically different than what I write for anything else. They do what you expect the code would do when you have the processing and memory available to throw at the problem. 300

Paul Iutzi @pji.bsky.social · 16/09/2026The same is true of the word think. We've been using that word for computers running an algorithm for as long as I've used computers. So, yes, a system using an LLM is "thinking," but so is a PAC-MAN arcade cabinet determining where Blinky moves in relation to PAC-MAN. 000
Paul Iutzi @pji.bsky.social · 16/09/2026I know the analogy to neurons is somewhat apt. The structure of neural networks and some features of the training process were inspired by what was/is thought to be the inner workings of the brain. But, it is an analogy, and I worry it gets overextended in conversations like this. 110
Paul Iutzi @pji.bsky.social · 16/09/2026I worry the use of the term "neuron" is an analogy that clouds the issue. As far as I'm aware, they are just terms in an extremely large equation. The coefficients for the terms are determined by a best-fitting process designed to cause the equation to output known good values for provided input. 100
Paul Iutzi @pji.bsky.social · 16/09/2026People personify simpler machines and tools all the time. We ascribe personalities to buildings and landscapes. We speak about subatomic particles having desires. I wouldn't think it would be bizarre at all for someone to feel like an ATM is being polite by printing "THANK YOU." 000
