Hurricane Ridge is in my corner of the world, but I also wish the reality suggested by this photo and its contents felt closer and more permanent. Cameras and horizons and manual switches. Everything is pointing away from these ideas. I appreciate an image that suggests a different direction.

Hannah Arendt defined totalitarianism as “organized loneliness”. I can’t think of a better definition of what AI and chat bots want to push us into, financed and designed by literal totalitarians

The Butlerian Jihad is real.
Pope Leo XIV: In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.

little did Karl Rove know, it would be Drumpfism that would totally reframe multiple generations’ relationship with civil and societal reality, not him and Dubya. Still became a Boomer poison nuke for civil cohesion. Although they helped all this along, no doubt!

the Man City nuke to the heart of English soccer culture is really something to behold. The Neo-Liberal, zero-sum, financial warfare mindset at odds with traditions that still maintain values you can’t *quite* (yet) just buy off. It’s almost quaint.

Formal affordances are the elements that pull a player toward certain actions, they “cry out” for the player to take those actions. Material affordances are the actions a system actually allows the player to take. Agency occurs when the two are in balance. (Mateas 2001)

Four days ago, a scientist was surprised by the news that Anthropic discovered new virus genes for making DNA. He says he’s been studying them for years—and feeding his data to Anthropic’s AI as part of his own research. Coincidence? Here’s my story. nyti.ms/3VSWayc

“You’ll be a part of television history.” Tough to pin a genre on the bizarre and mesmerizing PRIMETIME, but horror slots in pretty well for me. Pattinson is totally committed in this darker-than-dark and disturbing picture about media and sex crimes. It says more than it means to.

AP Stylebook warns against anthropomorphizing AI systems: “Avoid language that gives them human characteristics… Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.”
APStylebook @APStylebook

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.

I think this is happening as we speak because the models require new and locked-away training data to improve themselves recursively for their product applications in health care or cybersecurity etc. It’s not accidental.

Landscape with Couple Walking and Crescent Moon (also frequently cataloged or shared online as Landscape with Couple Walking) by Artist Vincent van Gogh. Year: Produced in 1890 (during his final months in Auvers-sur-Oise).
This evocative nocturne features a dark, heavily textured sky illuminated by a glowing crescent moon and scattered stars. In the foreground, two silhouetted figures stroll across a dimly lit field, framed by a dense wall of trees that underscores the vast and solitary atmosphere typical of Van Gogh's late expressionistic landscapes.
