“Every day they came to rape me.”

A Sudanese girl, now 13, told NYT columnist Nicholas Kristof that Rapid Support Forces fighters repeatedly raped her and subjected her to genital mutilation after her family attempted to flee El Fasher, in Darfur last year.

The girl now struggles to walk and lacks adequate food and medical care at a displacement camp in Tawila. Relatives corroborated her account, and aid workers told Kristof the family had told them the same story.

In his September 12 column, Kristof examines how Biden and Trump recognized genocide in Sudan but refuse to hold the RSF’s chief backer, the UAE, accountable.
Nicholas Kristof
@NickKristof
Presidents Biden and Trump both called the carnage in Sudan a genocide, yet both did nothing serious to address it. World leaders will gather in NYC for UN General Assembly shortly, and they won't do anything serious either. The US is effectively protecting Trump's business partners in the UAE, which is underwriting mass murder and mass rape in Sudan.

So what does this mean on the ground? I talked to a 13-year-old girl who was held in a rape camp by the UAE-armed RSF militia; the girl still can't walk properly. Here's a gift link: https://nytimes.com/2026/09/12/opinion/trump-sudan-genocide.html?unlocked_article_code=1.AlE.VJhc.xIrk4bbCRvVF&smid=url-share I hope leaders gathering at the UN will think of this girl and recognize the human cost of their dithering.

⭕️ B’Tselem report documents Israel’s “eliminationist project” in the occupied West Bank

The Israeli human rights organization B’Tselem released a lengthy new report entitled “The Elimination Project” on Monday, detailing Israel’s “systematic effort to dismantle Palestinian collective existence in the West Bank.”

The report says this effort has accelerated since the current government took office in December 2022 and especially since October 7, 2023, identifying five interconnected mechanisms used by Israeli forces in the territory: violence and intimidation, movement restrictions, economic strangulation, social and political destruction, and ethnic cleansing and territorial takeover.

Israel has established 200 new checkpoints since October 7, 2023, the report finds, seized about 18% of Palestinian land in the occupied West Bank through settlements and illegal outposts, and depopulated 64 Palestinian shepherding communities.B'Tselem בצלם بتسيلم
@btselem
Israel is dismantling Palestinian collective life in the West Bank.

A catastrophe is unfolding across the West Bank. Checkpoints, expulsions, killings and land takeovers are not separate events or isolated human rights violations. They are part of the same system. It is time to connect the dots.

Our new report, The Elimination Project, shows how these mechanisms form one political project: dismantling Palestinian collective life while expanding Israeli control and Jewish presence.

Since late 2022, and especially since October 2023, this process has accelerated and become more openly violent. Palestinians live under constant threat from soldiers and armed settler militias. Since 7 October 2023, Israel has killed 1,107 Palestinians, including 245 children. State-backed settler farms and outposts seize vast areas, communities are expelled, and movement restrictions fragment Palestinian space.

Israel is also strangling the Palestinian economy, criminalizing political and social organizing, shutting down civil society organizations and arresting journalists and activists.
Together, these mechanisms cut Palestinians off from land, livelihoods and one another, dismantling the conditions they need to exist as a people – with institutions, leadership, shared history and a political future.

The Elimination Project is not new. Its logic has shaped Israeli policy for decades through dispossession, fragmentation, military rule and apartheid. In 2017, Bezalel Smotrich published the “Decisive Plan,” centered on making Jewish-Israeli control irreversible. It gives Palestinians three options: relinquish their collective aspirations and live under Jewish supremacy, leave, or face military repression. Under the current government, central elements of this vision are being translated into policy, budgets, powers and practices. In Gaza, this logic has reached its most extreme manifestation: the genocide Israel is committing there.

The international community must stop treating Israel’s violence and violations as isolated incidents, stop enabling Israel’s crimes, and end the impunity that allows the Elimination Project to continue.

Connect the dots. See the system.

Read more in our new report.

After @angierasmussen.bsky.social crushed his lab leak plausibility claims, fmr Biden COVID czar Ashish Jha calls for a “real, transparent, international investigation” into COVID origins. Last June, the WHO Scientific Advisory Group on the Origins of Novel Pathogens did that. Conclusion? Zoonosis
Ashish Jha: This from my friend, Stanford's David Relman, on Covid origins is worth your time.
David helped write federal biosecurity policy and is one of the most thoughtful, even-handed experts in the country.
David says:
Rand Paul is right — NIH helped fund risky work in Wuhan that spliced bat virus fragments together like a game of chance, under weak safety rules.
Tony Fauci is right too — that published work doesn't look like a plausible
Covid precursor.
Relman says what's needed now:
— Everyone claiming certainty should back off and show some humility
— A real, transparent, international investigation
- Scientists accept guardrails on risky research; political leaders commit to honest public debate
We're doing none of it.
