@felixrl.bsky.social presenting his work at #ASMicrobe today. His preprint follows up on his recent work on orthogonal cell division in S. aureus and reports that PcdA, the division septum placement factor, is required for forming staphylococcal abscess colonies.

Bacterial transmembrane proteins usually localize inside the cell by "finding" a pre-localized protein, but how did the 1st protein get there? @vanipande.bsky.social found a protein in #B.subtilis that localizes by recognizing a *lipid* localization cue. #Microsky www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

Introducing CINEscience - a project I’m attempting to turn scientific papers into visual stories about the people, experiments, and ideas that shape discovery. First film: EzrA, a molecular organizer of Staphylococcus aureus. Here’s a teaser. Full video soon. #SciComm #Microbiology

Beyond thrilled to finally see my postdoctoral work with Dr. Alexander Horswill, published in @natcomms.nature.com Here we report how the absence of surface associated collagen binding adhesin causes visibly worsened skin infection. Bacterial deception at its best! www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Collagen binding adhesin restricts Staphylococcus aureus skin infection - Nature Communications
Staphylococcus aureus is able to evade host immune responses by expressing surface adhesins, like collagen binding adhesin (Cna). Here, the authors report the role of Cna during S. aureus skin infecti...

Breast milk isn't just nutrition – it delivers live bacterial strains that colonize the infant gut and persist for months. Happy to share our new paper, where we used metagenomics to track bacterial strains between 195 mother-infant pairs over the first 6 months of life: doi.org/10.1038/s414...

Thrilled to share my work from the @jkagan1.bsky.social lab! TLDR: O-acetylation and wall teichoic acid compete for space on S. aureus peptidoglycan. This competition regulates DNA release, and thus immune receptor activation, during infection! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... #microsky #immunosky

Cohousing or cross-fostering followed by cohousing does not normalize the microbiomes of genetically distinct adult mice
Lietuvninkas et al. use state-of-the-art gnotobiotic approaches to investigate whether cohousing or cross-fostering overpower the role of genetics in shaping the fecal bacterial commensal population. ...

A major challenge in RNA delivery is overcoming poor loading efficiency into nanoparticles. F. Machinandiarena solves this by using "SSHELs", our particles inspired by bacterial spores, to deliver RNA specifically to HER2+ ovarian cancer cells. kwnsfk27.r.eu-west-1.awstrack.me/L0/https:%2F...
