Here's a nice new study on the diversity of the Eros blue. Last summer I saw one of the more differentiated of the group, Taygetos blue. It was the first time I visited the higher parts of Taygetos and it surely ended in my top of favorite European butterfly sites! Check ALT for info!
Taygetos blue, Polyommatus eros menelaos

Taygetos mountain, Greece, app. 2000m

Here you can clearly see that the upperside is paler blue than in P. icarus, with a clear broad dark edge.Taygetos blue, Polyommatus eros menelaos

Taygetos mountain, Greece, app. 2000m

The underside in eros blue males is often cold grey with the marginal pattern with smaller & neater spots than in P. icarus.Taygetos blue, Polyommatus eros menelaos

Taygetos mountain, Greece, app. 2000m

Copula, in a lot of populations males emerge earlies than females so they can already establish a territory when the females start emerging. This male is clearly already battered by territory fights and the harsh Peloponnesian sun while the female is neat & fresh.

Detail of the painting "The Garden of Earthly Delights" of Hieronymus Bosch, painted in 1480-1490. A Small tortoiseshell is painted in the middle panel, it was clearly a well known species in the low countries.
https://purews.inbo.be/ws/portalfiles/portal/34490219/Maes_etal_2021_IUCNRodeLijstVanDeDagvlindersInVlaanderen2021.pdf

My oldest butterfly observations date back to 1990 when I was 11 years old. I had numerous observations of small tortoiseshell, with 8 individuals as maximum on 20th july 1990. This picture from 2026 is from the Hautes Vosges because I didn't see one in Flanders this year... On the last Flemish butterfly red list we had to put the species in the category "endangered". The only reason it didn't end up in critically endangered is because it is present in surrounding regions and we can thus expect a savior effect.

As a validator on our citizen science platform waarnemingen.be I only found one confirmed caterpillar sighting of Small tortoiseshell in 2026 in Flanders. Most of the recent Belgian caterpillar sightings appear to come from the High Ardennes. This picture is from the Italian Alps from 2025, small tortoiseshell is finding the coolness in height, Flanders has become too hot.

Scarce copper, Lycaena virgaureae, a female from the last Belgian population near Bertrix, pic was taken in 2010. Last individuals were seen in 2020 at this location, one male was seen a few km away in 2023, the last Belgian sighting until now. As Belgian locations are among the lowest in C-Europe it can be assumed that #climatedisturbance played a role in the disappearance fo this species.
