Grote Pijlstormvogel op Nieuwe Maas bij Rozenburg ZH: gister gezien in Waalhaven in Rotterdam, vandaag (pas) gemeld en vanmiddag herontdekt bij Vlaardingen, meegaand met het tij - er zijn 19 eerdere gevallen in NL van deze Zuid-Atlantische zeevogel maar dit is de 1e die ‘iedereen’ kon zien!

De minister vond dat we woonstbetredingen te dramatisch voorstelden. Dus keken we opnieuw naar wat er écht in het wetsontwerp staat. Want als zo’n ingrijpende maatregel alleen voor uitzonderlijke situaties bedoeld is, moet de wet die grens ook duidelijk trekken. Die grens ligt bij de voordeur.

The Essex Skipper (zwartsprietdikkopje, T lineola) had declined by >90% on Dutch Butterfly Monitoring transects since 1995. In N America the species is an invasive, accidentilly introduced around 1910, still expanding. This photo from www.inaturalist.org/observations/231653174 shows it in NW Canada.

Google finally updated some of its satellite images of Gaza and my god, it's horrific. The entirety of Rafah has been demolished. The majority of Khan Younis is in ruins. Entire towns completely leveled and erased of the map.

2026 gave us more butterflies on Dutch Butterfly Monitoring transects than 2023 and 2024 (these years were the worst since 1990), and a little bit more than 2025, especially in August. But beware of shifting baseline, numbers in most years in the 1990s were often twice as high as nowadays.

I've seen Borbo borbonica in S Spain (also on Squirting cucumber, one of its favorite nectar plants) so I perfectly understand the thrill of finding this rare species. But in a broader perspective it should worry us that this many African species get a foothold in Spain. #climatechange

N.a.v. de kwestie Freddy Mortier zie ik veel gejeremieer dat "vrije meningsuiting dood is aan de UGent!" etc. Maar mensen in een publiek die hun mening willen uiten, hebben weinig opties naast uitjouwen of de zaal verlaten. Vrije meningsuiting geldt niet alleen voor machtige mannen met microfoons.

Short thread: 18 months ago, as part of their assault on higher ed, Trump/DOGE/Vought terminated my friend Kelton Minor's NIH Director's award that would have allowed him to take a faculty position there. Without the funds, Columbia ultimately rescinded the position. Kelton moved to Denmark.
