Very interesting so far. Danielle Layne will be arguing - over the course of the seminar - that Platonism could be a method of self-development that gives us "something more" than Epicureanism and Stoicism, the two schools privileged by wellness culture. Something more than mere emotional control.

Palinode's free online course on Platonic mysticism goes live soon! Still time to sign up. "This four week seminar explores the basics of Platonism, focusing on its relevance for a life well lived." Reading "Plato’s dialogues [...] as saturated with myth, symbol, and initiatory experiences" #philsky
"Our courses are epic.
Palinode courses are called epics because we believe that learning is a lifelong adventure, which enriches and nourishes our soul.

Each of our offerings invite you to engage with topics that inspire deep philosophical ways of living, drawing upon ancient Platonic wisdom to understand our contemporary life and world.

Our epics are delivered in month-long blocks and provide you with a community to discuss enlivening topics that inspire creative output and transformation."

Just wanted to share a picture from this week’s “Self in the Social World” conference in Heidelberg where I had a lot of fun nerding out about RPGs and mental health (so much so, I talked through the Q&A time) Also wearing my critical roll t-shirt to be on brand 💅
It’s a picture of me (the beautiful brunette on the right) in front of a screen with the opening slide of my presentation “Affective Play: Why Collaborative Roleplay is Beneficial for Mental Health”. It has a blue boarder and features a series of different D&D type characters.

One time, I lost my favourite watch in the sea. We were swimming along the beach for a while so I didn't know when & where I lost it. I immediately gave up; it was pointless to try. A friend of my mom - a philosopher who gifted me Spinoza books - went back a few meters, dove in & found it right away

I've been so mad at Prequel Yoda lately, for being a Wise Man with no wisdom at all. It won't take much for you to convince me to hate Mace Windu too. Although there is the fact that he is said to be more "powerful" than "wise" (anakin quote "..as wise as Master Yoda and as powerful as Mace Windu")

Beautiful. I remember someone saying that this painting was reminiscent of Plato's allegory of the cave. Now I can't unsee it. But what is the emotion displayed by the lady in the light right there? So mysterious. I love this painting.

Ironically, that's a reason why I draw a comparison with Christianity. A lot of christians just want to go to their local churches & do charity... But at the top of the hierarchy the religion betrays its mission, and so it's on the people at the bottom of the ladder to bear the dissonance... Unfair

I'm a big fan of effective altruism. Not a big fan of how it managed to speed-run what happened to Christianity: - becomes a state religion - immediately reverses all of its founding values - no self-consciousness or cognitive dissonance about it whatsoever for the people in power

The "Alarmibragging" of AI companies. Good point and good word. Let's spread that neologism because that's a really useful word for this weird dynamic of "AI will kill us all, give us money". Although personally I would have said it as "Alarm-bragging"

I'm playing through Star Wars Zero Company right now and the writers really make it satisfying to play through these periods of historical upheavals. As you point out: this is only possible because the prequels were not scared of establishing real upheaval! Now the writers get to draw on that.

Nothing to add I haven't said elsewhere except the examples you cite need to die. When prophecy fails, people tend to say "well, guess I was wrong," and the Kahan gun control study doesn't replicate.

here's one sort of example of why i'm not drawn to the 'not really beliefs' views. a common argument (it's been made for religious and political 'beliefs', and it's certainly available for philosophical 'beliefs' too) is that beliefs are, necessarily, evidence-sensitive. if a state is impervious

this is something people find intuitive but if you do some introspective phenomenology it’s pretty obviously false? when you’re experiencing pure joy you don’t discern it by comparing it with pain — pain is the furthest thing from your mind!
Pain is part of experiencing joy. If you never experience pain how can you even discern joy? Contrast is what makes something relevant. Without it everything is taupe.

Very clear from the last movie that Peter Parker and Frank Castle are "let's-not-talk-about-politics-it-would-make-everyone-upset" kind of friends. Shame. Frank needs to stop killing bikers. Peter should know about the horrors of war. It's called "reaching across the aisle".

But coming up with new philosophical ideas is like creating the building in the first place. And the ability to recognize novelty should not be taken for granted
