Just wanted to share a picture from this week’s “Self in the Social World” conference in Heidelberg where I had a lot of fun nerding out about RPGs and mental health (so much so, I talked through the Q&A time) Also wearing my critical roll t-shirt to be on brand 💅
It’s a picture of me (the beautiful brunette on the right) in front of a screen with the opening slide of my presentation “Affective Play: Why Collaborative Roleplay is Beneficial for Mental Health”. It has a blue boarder and features a series of different D&D type characters.

One time, I lost my favourite watch in the sea. We were swimming along the beach for a while so I didn't know when & where I lost it. I immediately gave up; it was pointless to try. A friend of my mom - a philosopher who gifted me Spinoza books - went back a few meters, dove in & found it right away

Beautiful. I remember someone saying that this painting was reminiscent of Plato's allegory of the cave. Now I can't unsee it. But what is the emotion displayed by the lady in the light right there? So mysterious. I love this painting.

I'm a big fan of effective altruism. Not a big fan of how it managed to speed-run what happened to Christianity: - becomes a state religion - immediately reverses all of its founding values - no self-consciousness or cognitive dissonance about it whatsoever for the people in power

The "Alarmibragging" of AI companies. Good point and good word. Let's spread that neologism because that's a really useful word for this weird dynamic of "AI will kill us all, give us money". Although personally I would have said it as "Alarm-bragging"

Nothing to add I haven't said elsewhere except the examples you cite need to die. When prophecy fails, people tend to say "well, guess I was wrong," and the Kahan gun control study doesn't replicate.

here's one sort of example of why i'm not drawn to the 'not really beliefs' views. a common argument (it's been made for religious and political 'beliefs', and it's certainly available for philosophical 'beliefs' too) is that beliefs are, necessarily, evidence-sensitive. if a state is impervious

this is something people find intuitive but if you do some introspective phenomenology it’s pretty obviously false? when you’re experiencing pure joy you don’t discern it by comparing it with pain — pain is the furthest thing from your mind!
Pain is part of experiencing joy. If you never experience pain how can you even discern joy? Contrast is what makes something relevant. Without it everything is taupe.

Very clear from the last movie that Peter Parker and Frank Castle are "let's-not-talk-about-politics-it-would-make-everyone-upset" kind of friends. Shame. Frank needs to stop killing bikers. Peter should know about the horrors of war. It's called "reaching across the aisle".

The Peace of Wild Things
Wendell Berry
When despair for the world grows in me and I wake in the night at the least sound in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be, I go and lie down where the wood drake rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds. I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief. I come into the presence of still water. And I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting with their light. For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

In my environmental philosophy class students begin the semester with “fear journals” in which they choose some species that they fear. Then they sketch it, and study it, and learn what makes it wonderful. I don’t fear this species, but I used to fear insects when I was a kid. Now I love them.

A great initiative. Training the mental health workforce to deal with philosophical themes:
"To address this need, we began to discuss continuing professional development (CPD) sessions on philosophical themes repeatedly raised by later-life patients. These include concerns about death, the meaning of life, justice, desert, virtue or the value of ignorance. We formulated the hypothesis that CPD sessions focusing on philosophical topics, led by a researcher with formal training in philosophy, may meet distinct training needs of the mental health workforce.

In February 2026, we designed and delivered a CPD session to nurses, psychologists and social workers in the NHS. The session focused on the topics of fear of death and conceptual analysis, and it involved teaching and discussion of these themes."

Am I participating in a hate movement? How would I know? Hounding someone to death does not always feel like doing much. We are like the snakes protruding from the back of Cerberus, unaware of being part of a larger monster. We can use this mnemonic image to learn the signs 🧵⬇️ #philsky #philtwit
Line art drawing of Cerberus by Pearson Scott Foresman, donated to Wikimedia Commons. It depicts a three headed hound, with a devil tail and a lot of snakes sprouting from the back of the monster. There are flames on the floor. The impression is that Cerberus is ugly, ferocious, but also it looks a bit desperate and fearful, like Goya's "Saturn devouring his son", for indeed its body and eyes are reminiscent of an ordinary anxious dog. I added captions to the drawing to make a philosophical point: "Anatomy of a Hate Movement, or How Persecuting People Gets Wide Appeal", I labeled the three heads of Cerberus "Insecure Traditionalist", "Insecure Misfit", "Cringe Curator".
