Please, Sigma Three, we're trying to inspire a generation of physicists! #AgentHiggs2 testtubegames.com/higgs2.html
Two cartoon characters that look like little blue sigmas talking to one another. The fun looking one says: Now that we've discovered all the particles, what do we do for fun? The dour one say: Who said particle physics would be fun?

If you walk into a forest and cut down a tree, but the tree doesn't understand why you cut it down, do you think it's stumped?

Why do paths through the Sierpiński triangle correspond to allowed sequences of moves in the Tower of Hanoi? Suppose we have 3 discs. Say (3,2,3) means "biggest disc on post 3, second biggest on post 2, third biggest on post 3". Suppose edges are allowed moves. We get this picture! (4/n)
If we draw all allowed states of the n-disc Tower of Hanoi puzzle, connected by edges representing allowed moves, we get a finite approximation of the Sierpinski triangle. This is the picture for n = 3, taken from here:

A Scottish audio company, famous for their turntables, once invented a CPU architecture.

Their internal software kind of sucked. Somehow along the way, the company became convinced that the problem was that all Von Neumann-style computers were WRONG.

A polar quad tree on top of a Poincaré disk model of hyperbolic space. Done by my Master's student Hunter v. Geffen, it enables acceleration of dimensionality reduction into hyperbolic space #MathSky. Details: ms-math-computer.science/publications... Quote post with something that is a circle. 🔵
Poincaré disk model of the hyperbolic plane with a large set of somewhat clustered, light gray points. On top of this, a hierarchical structure that resembles a quad tree, but with circularly bent pieces. The hierarchy is almost everywhere sparse, except for a dense area in the east of the disk around a bold, red X-mark.

Yesterday‘s pattern has me revisiting the same theme on the 9cube. Unlike yesterday's pattern, this link is not Brunnian.
8 perspectives of a 9-layer Rubik's cube solved to a state in which four threads weave among each other to form a braided link. The link is alternating and has 36 crossings.A planar embedding of the link in the other photo. The link is alternating, has 36 crossings, has 4 components, and each component crosses with the other three six times.

You may have heard that the Banach-Tarski paradox is a consequence of the group of spatial rotations SO(3) having a subgroup that is free on two generators. But what does that look like? Answer: Roughly like this! kyleormsby.github.io/F2-in-SO3/ 1/n 🧮
F₂ inside SO(3) ≅ ℝP³
Generators A = rotation by arccos(1/3) about x-axis, B = same about z-axis. Each reduced word w becomes a rotation in SO(3); we plot it as the point θn̂ in the ball of radius π, where θ ∈ [0, π] is the rotation angle and n̂ is its unit axis. Edges are true SO(3)-geodesics — some wrap through ∂B and reappear at the antipodal point (the ℝP³ identification). Now transformed into the standard 'tree' Cayley graph of F_2.

If you're given only twelve 1 ohm resistors but you need a circuit with an equivalent resistance of pi (approximated as closely as possible), and you have to use all of the resistors (no shorting or leaving them out), here the ways to get 22/7 ohms (which is the best you can do). #math #circuits
