El Niño 2026: How Strong, and the La Niña That Follows
A very strong El Niño is coming, but physics and AI forecasts agree it isn't a clear record on NOAA's RONI index. The signal, the warming, and the 2027 La Niña.

Global mean sea surface temperature anomalies (departure from average) so far this year ➡️ 3rd highest on record 🌊 Data from NOAA ERSSTv5 averaged over January to March.
Green line graph time series of average sea surface temperature anomalies for each January to March period from 1900 through 2026. There is large interannual variability, but an overall long-term increasing trend. Anomalies are computed relative to a 1981-2010 baseline.

Researchers from University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa created a simple ocean-based model to predict El Niño and La Niña 15 months ahead using ocean surface temperature and height data. It achieves forecast skill similar to complex models. The current forecast predicts a strong El Niño later this year. 🌊

CDR isn't just direct air capture (DAC), which people currently think takes too much energy. There are other terrestrial and marine CDR methods, so we need to research which ones could work (in the sense I mentioned in my slide).
Infographic titled "An Overview of Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) Methods" by Carbon Gap, showing 4 main categories of CDR methods: Enhanced ecosystem management, Biomass conversion/preservation, Geochemical carbon removal, and Synthetic carbon removal. Each method is described with its process, readiness level, storage duration, and reversal risk. Methods include techniques like afforestation, biochar, direct air capture, and ocean alkalinity enhancement. A cross-section illustration depicts land, sea, and industrial settings. Readiness ranges from high to low; storage duration spans decades to hundreds of millennia; reversal risk ranges from very high to negligible.

Simplistic and therefore not very accurate but perhaps easier to understand: The earth's surface is 71% water. 1°C over the ocean surface is equivalent to about 4.5°F over the entire land surface. If oceans weren't buffering the energy from the sun we'd be almost 5 degrees warmer all day every day.
