It's becoming very obvious that generative AI is making all forms of non-exam assessment totally obsolete. It's a threat to the integrity of education everywhere. It's not that hard to solve though - we just need more handwritten & in-person exams! substack.nomoremarking.com/p/how-should...

You can't use one assessment for multiple purposes - it gets pulled out of shape. That's what happened to GCSEs when they were used for all kinds of purposes they weren't designed for. Things are a bit better at secondary now - but what about primary?

5. Adults learn the same as children. For some reason when we deliver PD for adults, we whip out lots of activities we would think twice about with pupils. Sugar paper, cutting and sticking, gimmicky games, group work, etc are things we might not do in class. Also, you must give enough time!
010
Phil Stock @philstock.bsky.social · 25/11/2024
4. Read the room Adaptive teaching is currently the pedagogy of choice, but it should also be at the heart of what trainers should do too: adapt to where the learners are. In the same way we plan for our pupils’ misconceptions and struggles, we need to be thinking the same way for adult learning.
110
Phil Stock @philstock.bsky.social · 25/11/2024
3. Stick to timings. I genuinely don’t understand why so many people struggle with this. The amount of sessions that overrun is staggering A useful rule of thumb = no more than 1 slide a min, probably much less than that. Unless you’re a star turn, finish early, have questions and end on a high!
110
Phil Stock @philstock.bsky.social · 25/11/2024
2. Ensure active participation. It’s actually really hard to stay focused for long periods of time without tasks to involve people and check their understanding. Some people can hold a room for 45mins or so but most people can’t, and it’s not actually great for learning things which is the point.

Phil Stock @philstock.bsky.social · 25/11/2024
1. Most presenters don’t actually attend to cognitive load, even when the session is about cognitive science principles: - chaotic slides - too many of them - too much text - reading out - no chunking - no structure - too much explanation Ask yourself: do I need this slide? Are people following?

Good post. FWIW it is ok to just say that some teachers talk for too long whilst not undermining the value of teacher talk. We all do it, often because we lose track of time or think we are being helpful by giving more details. We expect a lot of pupils in terms of focus, so we should be mindful.
