You can't *really* have your interdependence and weaponize it too unless the other parties agree that your weaponization is reasonable, or at least not too costly.

A lot of rich guys want you to think that the bar on the right is always going to be bigger than the bar on the left.
Vertical bar chart titled "Norwegian wealth tax revenue, change from 2021 to 2024," in billions of Norwegian kroner (BNOK), nominal. Subtitle: top rate 0.85% to 1.1% and stock valuation discount cut from 2022.

Two bars. "Growth with no emigration": 13.71 BNOK, a tall bar. "Lost to reform-driven emigration": 0.65 BNOK, a barely visible stub, about one-twenty-first the height.

Notes: Growth includes the rate and valuation changes and wealth growth. Net of tax that emigrants still paid, the reform-driven loss is 0.49 BNOK.

A wrinkle is that the Treasurys are often held as futures rather than in cash, because by hypothesis they are low yield. The Treasury futures have a cheapest-to-deliver option which can also cause negative convexity when yields are around 6%, because bonds of different maturities are eligible.

Philip Koop 🇨🇦 @philkoop.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
MBS have shorter duration than Treasurys of the same maturity because of both amortization and prepayment, but they have higher yield. In a mixed portfolio, the MBS are held to increase yield and the Treasurys to increase duration. You manage the duration by adjusting the Treasurys, not the MBS.

Two panels at the #Disinfo2026 conference seem to have particularly upset the MAGA people. It would be a shame if people weren’t aware of them.
Day 1, October 7, 11:45 - 12:30
Under attack: How the counter-disinformation community is dealing with US government pressure
#solutions
room: Zeta
Panel
On 23 December 2025, the US government (USG) imposed travel bans and deportation orders on five European figures - former EU Commissioner Thierry Breton, Imran Ahmed, Clare Melford, Anna-Lena von
Hodenberg, and Josephine Ballon - accusing them of censoring US social media platforms.
The use of legal intimidation to wage personal attacks raises its own free-speech concerns as well as questions about the appropriate use of legal punishment in a policy debate. The United States Government's attacks to intimidate individuals and organisations are an unprecedented escalation in defense of US corporations seeking to avoid regulation and criticism. This panel will examine the chilling effect these tactics can potentially have on the community of researchers, journalists, and former government officials who fight disinformation, propaganda and hate speech online. The panel will also discuss how some are fighting back against these tactics.
Speakers:
Claire Pershan, Coalition for Independent Technology Research
Josephine Ballon, HateAid
Chair:
Gregory Rohde, EU DisinfoLabDay 1, October 7, 10:45 - 11:45
USA as a FIMI threat: acknowledge, adapt, push back #infospaces
room: Alfa
Presentations
This session addresses one of the most uncomfortable questions in the counter-disinformation field today: how did the United States become a FIMI threat for Europe? The session will explore how the counters disinformation community rebuilds resilience without Washington, what solidarity looks like in a fractured transatlantic environment, and how to push back against on these operations.
Speakers:
Adam Fivenson, Center for Security, Innovation & New Technology at American University Alex Finley, Former officer of CIA's Directorate of Operations, Centre for Strategic Advantage Emerson Brooking, Nonresident Senior Fellow, DFRLab
Chair:
Carlos Hernández-Echevarría, Fundación Maldita.es

Early reports suggest Global Affairs Canada has withdrawn sponsorship of a disinformation conference over a panel discussing the U.S. as a threat vector. If true, this is utterly embarrassing, and a sign Global Affairs is woefully unprepared to engage with the geopolitical context we are in.

OK, now I need to know what the _rude_ word for Russians was (from Stefan Korshak)
I don’t normally pass on word-for-word reports from Ukrainian mil-bloggers because there’s usually plenty of direct information, but as an exception here’s a post from a well-connected and reliable Ukrainian named Ihor, who blogs under the handle Marmuletik. Most likely he’s a mid-level ZSU officer most often assigned in the Donbas sector:

“All night long near Dobropillya, the (rude word for Russians) were storming AFU positions; the guys say they piled up heaps of “meat” — the place is littered with “good Russians.” Two of them managed to slip through and dig into a hideout. So right now, our lads are smoking out those spawn of whores — the kind who give birth while drunk to the children of junkies. We have two drone pilots with minor wounds. All positions held, and the occupiers’ losses are astronomical!”

one of the ways the media shows which side they prefer, is which politicians they quote uncharitably out-of-context and which they clean up for even when what they actually say and do is offensive (the Biden story ran on the front page less than a week before the 24 election)

I drew a map of this project not so long ago!
A greyscsle map of the lower half of Vancouver Island showing marmot release sites. The map features vaguely fantasy-style mountains, and has little black silhouettes of marmots to show release sites. An insert in the upper right shows most of Canada and highlights the location off the main map. A second insert map, below the first, shows all of Vancouver Island.

This is actually a pretty interesting theory. Social media works on community detection and triadic closure to feed you stuff that'll keep you engaged. But LLMs work differently and don't really have the training data to keep a random person in an epistemic bubble, I don't think.

Wage growth just keeps slowing. And yes, wages are rising slower than prices, and no, that's not how economic growth is meant to work.
Line chart titled "Nominal wage growth is slowing" showing year-over-year growth in average hourly earnings of private-sector workers. Wage growth has declined steadily from a peak of 5.9% in early 2022 to 3.0% in September 2026, the slowest rate in the series. This nearly 3 percentage point drop over four and a half years indicates significantly cooler labor market conditions, with the deceleration accelerating in recent months as growth fell from the 3.7-3.9% range in 2025 to the low 3% range currently.
