The main challenge is: Simply telling the athlete "don't buy it" is not enough. You have to explain that the marketing is deceiving and why it doesn't add benefit to their training. And with the blink of an eye half an hour of my time is gone 🤷‍♂️

An athlete sent me the link to this company. Both the name and the landing page suggest it measures lactate. You have to click a few links to learn it's NIRS! I don't know anything about the device, but the marketing is maximally deceiving. I wouldn't trust a company with this strategy! ❌
A screenshot from the landing page of Q-Lac, claiming "training load based on lactate"Another screenshot from the website. After clicking a few links you learn it's a NIRS device measuring SmO2

Muscle oxidative capacity analysis with #mnirs is monoexponential by consensus. But are there secondary drift kinetics hiding in the data and biasing results?🤔 No idea, but could 'slow-component' drift be related to hyperaemia + metabolic rate adjustments as seen here? Thoughts? #rstats

I made a #Shiny app about post hoc power and effect-size uncertainty. If you accept an observed effect, you also need to accept its uncertainty. The app shows how power wobbles when you consider the CI, not just the estimate. Embrace the #wobble #samplesize open.substack.com/pub/mzlotean...

Power is wobbly, and 80% might be more like 5%
A Shiny app for showing that power analysis based on an empirical effect-size estimate is only as stable as the estimate itself.

Sport scientists love finding corners on a circle 😄
A cartoon meme template with a person looking at a computer screen and saying "show me a breakpoint". The computer answers "here is a breakpoint" and the screen shows the classic Jamnick et al, 2018 image of multiple lactate breakpoints on a lactate curve, with obviously no real "breakpoint" per se. The person answers "oh my god", as a commentary that when we ask a computational algorithm to find a breakpoint on a partial circular line, it will give us a breakpoint, whether or not it is physiologically meaningful. The corner of a circle, if you will.
