Well I guess if their share is shrinking, it's all the more important that workers' productivity increases

Just the general idea that increasing productivity benefits anyone but the richest people is pretty stale. The last 50 years show us that this is a false hope. It would have been better for most people to have falling productivity with redistribution.

This story doesn't help Cornell pass the buck as much as they hoped. The conclusion is basically: No DA should ever trust campus police. (Raising the question: why do private universities have real police again?) www.nytimes.com/2026/10/02/n...
The former prosecutors, however, said the district attorney's approach fell short in multiple ways, including his failure to bring Jane Doe in to be interviewed by his office and his apparent total reliance on a statement recorded - and, more broadly, an investigation conducted
— by the university police.
"We would never rely on a campus police investigation," said Rick Trunfio, a former sex crimes prosecutor in upstate New York and now an adjunct law professor at Syracuse University. "There's too many problems with that"

America will continue punching itself in the face until morale improves: NSF eliminating social science funding

89% of SBE NSF grants were never awarded!! My field (Cognitive Neuroscience) is included in this gutting, as are so many others. Plenty of horror stories in the same space are also coming from NIH. It’s not just delaying research; it’s labs shutting down and a next gen that won’t be trained.

No, it's a new phenomenon. Her point is AI increases productivity so it's good.

For all the times I've seen someone post 10 papers at once, I have never once thought they were were disseminating.

That said, @socarxiv.bsky.social allows 2 per week, more than arXiv's 2/month, and (because we have no way to automate this), mostly use it to stop big paper dumps. If you have three dissertation chapters or are on a conference deadline, we have the discretion to allow it, and you can ask.

If your AI agents are cranking out so much content that it won't fit into a few papers, disseminate it some other way -- don't force it into "paper" form just to get it on a preprint server. Make a collage, a movie, a data repository, an interpretive dance. Let papers be things humans read.

Philip N Cohen @philipncohen.com · 18h
I disagree with this post almost completely. Done right, a reasonable paper limit is not "asking scientists to slow down" because progress isn't measured in the number of "papers." It's the old salami. Write a good, thorough paper, instead of 10 padded slopbombs or inconsequential mini-pies

I try to remember to speak as if everything will come out. I don't think the newspaper chain is the issue. Unless you're off the record, or make another arrangement, the journalist can use it however they like (or so I assume)

if you've been wondering how thin the commitment to the cultural is as an. 'alternative' to explicit racism of the more clearly segregationist sort, consider the implications of "the mere fact of us being able to notice" that someone is of South Asian heritage as ruling our assimilation

Agree. Especially if by "investigate" we include asking, "can I please read the whole thing?" I have to assume the hours of incompetent interviews by Cornell staff also undermined the eventual prosecution, but I guess that remains to be seen.

Like a "wait for it" TikTok video, the best stupid clickbait headline is one where you have to read through the entire article trying to find "this mistake" revealed. When, as in this case, it never appears, who cares? Eyeballs achieved.

I'm wary of politicians telling people that we can solve problems by taxing Other People. I'd like to see this framed as an issue of fairness: We're good at taxing labor income. But through an array of tax breaks, we don't tax income from wealth and pass-through income as much. We should fix that.

If you are generating two papers per week, you're wasting everyone's time and resources (moderators, readers, earth). Slow down and ask your robot to make something more valuable.

I agree it's an empirical question, I just think the incentives skew wrong. It also could depend on local politics (Ithaca is not Hillsdale, MI), small/big, state/private, etc. But my (untested) bias is toward public over private police.

Those are some reasons, but the more perverse ones are crucial. Think of it this way: what large institution would not prefer to control policing in its own space? Google and Walmart would love to be in charge of crimes committed on their property, and not because they value democratic justice.

Should be. When university has a real police department, though, 911 goes to them first. The small town police consider this a relief, cuz they are sick of frat party noise complaints. But they should just tax the university enough to cover it instead of giving up the power.

Philip N Cohen @philipncohen.com · 01/10/2026
100%. Universities have their own police only for bad reasons - because they want police powers to do things real police don't want to do (suppress protests, hush up rape cases, make sure the president is not charged for running over students, protect children of rich donors, etc)

Philip N Cohen @philipncohen.com · 01/10/2026
Whatever the (many) problems with police and prosecutors generally, adding the university layer just compounds the perverse incentives. It's insane that a (Cornell) Title IX officer was present during the (Cornell) police interview.

Philip N Cohen @philipncohen.com · 01/10/2026
Private universities having real police powere has always been a terrible idea, as student activists all understood when these departments where formed. Cornell is putting on a malfeasance clinic that might just help drive this point home

NYT today: victim "spoke for hours to a Cornell police investigator and an investigator from Cornell’s Title IX office." Cornell damage control from the beginning. You might improve university practices here, but my conclusion is the university has no good role to play in a criminal rape case.

The idea that we can't build a working child care system without simultaneously paying a stipend to people who opt out of that system that's just enough to promote marriage but not enough to allow equal opportunities for single mothers is fascinating to me.
