What Music Is
Have you ever seen a Pomeranian goose?
One comes to visit me every morning
at the end of third shift. It's domesticated
& the people next door to our medical facility
let it wander. It waddles up to the walk
as I leave work: honk honk do you have bread sir?
Perhaps a fish or two? It's brown
            & white & big & a bit pushy.
Pretty bird I tell it & it preens
            like an addled swan.
I always wonder what the birds are saying.
How do starlings sway in their murmuration
across the sky? After do they tell each other,

LATE QUARTETS
             The canyon walls’ striations
Wrought by water, by wind,
                          Reveal deviations
             In the parallel of lines.

                         : :

             How to integrate the minutiae—
The febrile marks, a torn web,
                          A ragged rope bridge— when
             Each act of ritual distances?

Scenes from the Lives of a Girl
i
The dead leaves clung to the young girl. They leapt
from the earth to clothe her. The linden and the oak,
elm and sycamore. Every time she arrived home she
was met by her exasperated mother moaning about
the leaves’ flaky deposits in her hallway, the baby slugs,
the not completely dead aphids. “Why don’t you brush
them off before you come home?” Her mother presumed
electricity in some static form had a hand. She never
witnessed the looks of astonishment that greeted her
daughter all along the road as leaves swept themselves up
to envelop her, astonishment too deep to rally an insult
or catcall. Astonishment of a kind no emoji exists for.

Market Forces
When there was less, it was easier to tell
a story about why there wasn’t enough.
Inside the lion’s emptiness, the zebra’s;
inside the zebra’s, the field’s; inside that,
the sky’s. In the age of sieges, you could
draw a circle around a city and, just like that,
boost the cost of flour. And doors’ futures.

In the age of abstractions, a market force
can not be demoed in dominoes. Instead
the tongues of our sneakers tell tales.
In all of them, the capital of capital
is a city impossible to besiege. It moves,
after all, all the barons and pirates
setting up shop over and over, halfway
between a zeitgeist and the latest fad.

Rapture, or When It Happens
- April 14, 1935, Black Sunday
Virgil waits for the black blizzard to pass.
No one tells him what to see or how long to wait.
There’s just Virgil and the fiddle
and the elbow where two roads meet
along an empty horizon purpled out
into darkness.

First it’s a vague distance, a collection,
the earth roiling out of itself.
Then the devil is in the dust
carrying what we’ve cast off—seeds, bits of skin,
what would have been wheat
in the land’s broken promise
lifting like a cloud.

Funeral Rites
by Raúl Zurita

translated from Spanish and with a foreword by Karen Elizabeth Bishop

Translating Zurita in this stereophonic form is like handling one hundred thousand stars that each announce themselves and their distance at once. I’m up close, inside, and then it’s gone before I even realize where I’m at and I’m on to the next one. Only in stepping back does the whole picture, the whole night sky, come into view. What becomes clear before us is that Zurita’s interventions in prose rival his poetic voice. And that Zurita sees our shared human future very clearly.

We sacrifice what’s real—natural world, sentient animals, our health, our climate—to uphold a contrived paradigm that equates meat with wellness and prosperity. More at bit.ly/world-revisited #nature #veganism #animalethics
Are you aware that industries promoting meat and dairy products have a vested interest in maintaining the status quo, even if it's at odds with scientific, environmental, or ethical insights?

Izmir, Three O’Clock

Just ahead on the nearly empty street
two beggars, one of them with no legs,
carried on the other's back.
They stood—as an animal stands
on a midnight road, frozen in the headlights—
for a moment, then went on
crossing the street like schoolboys at play
while the myriad clocks
of the midday heat ticked in space.

Why look after some but slaughter the others? Continuing to kill and eat animals when there are alternatives isn’t a collective need—it’s an individual choice. See it for what it is. More at bit.ly/world-revisited #nature #biodiversity #veganism #animalethics

there’s a fish head staring at me
his one eye russet like potatoes back home
but these are golden

earlier today I saw a sea turtle breach
by the bow of the boat before diving down a
million meters and I couldn’t see him anymore

I’m too scared to open my eyes. So I resolve to use my hands as a guide. Surprisingly I’m doing well despite my self-imposed handicap. I feel for the big coins just like I had been advised. I put as many as I can in my little hands, trying not to drop any in the process. It’s a difficult task that requires patience and agility. My body is moving slowly and awkwardly, my arms flapping up and down in slow motion. The water is creating resistance on my movements, but I am persisting. Once both my hands are full, I clasp them tightly and make my way to the top.

Pentecost of the stones. And with crackling tongues...
The city weightless in the wide sweep of the midday hour.
A burial in seething light. The drum that drowns out
the pounding fists of trapped eternity.

The eagle swirls higher and higher over the sleepers.
Sleep, where the millwheel turns like thunder.
The stomping of a blindfolded horse.
The pounding fists of trapped eternity.

Every time we see a meat ad, it asks us not only to BUY, but to KILL. MEAT is a linguistic shield. Replace it with BODIES. More at bit.ly/world-revisited #nature #veganism #animalethics
Did you know that most farm animals are slaughtered at a fraction of their natural lifespan, often before reaching social or cognitive maturity?
