Secret Transfusion

Firs heal their cuts
by dripping resin day and night,
the way swans cover themselves in oil
so water doesn’t touch their sails.

If each fir
poured a little resin
for no reason,
just like that, for the world’s hurt
overall…

This fir, a drop,
that one, another—
How much universal sadness
would a forest ease!

I feel like I’m healing
from a fright,

Lord, what candle
burns for me in the wind
on some far, far-away rock?
