I don’t think everyone realizes how bad things are for US science: For the fiscal year that just ended, the Trump regime withheld $1.4 billion from the National Science Foundation’s research budget, which is about 1/5 of its primary research budget.

The Trump administration hates academic science funding, full stop. They hate where that money goes, and they hate who it goes to. They want to keep all that money for themselves, to hand out to favored cronies who can help them get elected and to steer yet more money and more power back into their hands.

Still befuddled by this: the debunking of the "chemical imbalance hypothesis of depression" in the 1970s and the later uptake by popular culture that persists. In the absence understanding of how antidepressants work, here's advice on how to communicate. www.rcpsych.ac.uk/mental-healt...

How do antidepressants work?

As with many other kinds of medications and treatments, we don't know for certain how antidepressants work. We do know that they affect the activity of certain chemicals in our brains. These are called neurotransmitters, and pass signals from one brain cell to another. The neurotransmitters most affected by antidepressants are serotonin and noradrenaline.

However, research suggests that antidepressants work on the brain in multiple ways that go beyond simple chemical reactions. This research suggests that they:

influence how the body responds to stress
    improve our negative thinking
stop or even reverse damage to brain cells.

The data is in: the NIH goalposts have shifted. What were once almost certain fundable scores have become coin flips and what used to be likely grants have become aspirational, leading to fewer awards. Another manifestation of how HHS policies have led to fewer awards and less science.
Graph of award probability of R35 and R01 from NIH factbook as a function of review rank percentile. As is apparent, 2025 is a significant departure, with lower award probabilities at all scores <40 and significant departures from norm, where even being in the top 10% is no longer a nearly certain indicator of success.
