It feels so heavy sometimes,
The weight of loss.
To think of all those who used to care for us,
Those we can no longer turn to,
No longer repay.
To think of the friends who once made us who we were,
Now names only remembered when a certain song plays,
Or when you remember who showed you a great movie.
Who we have torn ourselves away from,
Or been torn from,
Or had torn from us.
To think of the pets we once thought would never fit our lives,
But sat at our feet when we worked,
Reminded us to get up and go walk,
Or nuzzled us when our hearts were broken.
To think of the people we might have beens,
The “one days” that passed us by while we worked,
The lives we might have lived, had one thing gone differently.
It all feels so heavy.

It’s only in the weight of my loss,
That I can truly reckon how rich I must have been.
To have so much to have lost.
To bear the weight of so many connections and possibilities.
To have loved and been loved,
Looking at it all at once, it seems impossible.
Someday I will look back at these words and marvel,
What a fool I will have been now to mistake so little loss for so much.
I will have found so many more things to lose then.
Like Marley’s chains to Scrooge’s.
I will be so much heavier.

I have realized that I write to make myself heavier,
To build stories that draw new friends and expectations.
Books like traps to catch like minds,
Books full of water to replenish like souls.
Books full of bandages to mend like hearts.
Books to make you heavier with possibilities.

Lightness is the curse of the uncaring,
To have no loss or possibilities to drag around.
I want to lift that curse.
It is so difficult to hold it all up.
It all feels so heavy.
But I would never choose to be an ounce lighter.
