If our credibility is as low as it is today (near zero) then we have to address the credibility side of the equation. To the extent that capability is in doubt, that rests far more on the conventional/navy and forward deployment side of the ledger than in nuclear weapons. 3/

While I have long been skeptical of the need for more nuclear weapons, this factor is critical. Despite what some in both parties and in Congress say, the US adding more nuclear capabilities will not help address the deep doubts about US commitments. Capability + credibility = deterrence. 2/

I get asked a lot how will US alliances and reassurance get back to the way things before. The answer is: They won't. US security experts need to be thinking about how the US can credibly commit its security to that of our allies in ways that can endure a disruptive leader like Trump or others. 1/

For me, this is the most important reason why I no longer see the U.S.A. as Sweden’s natural ally. Moreover, there is simply no way to trust a country that disrespects the sovereignty of its own allies. There is simply no alternative to strengthening ties with European allies.
