What did you need to bring to Oxford as a fresher more than a century ago? 🎓 Hertford College’s packing list included four dusters, six bedroom towels and enough crockery for luncheon and afternoon tea. 📷 | Hertford College #WelcomeToOxford
An archival document from Hertford College, believed to date from the early 20th century, listing items undergraduates were advised to bring when beginning their first term. The list includes two pairs of sheets and pillowcases, three tablecloths, toilet covers, six bedroom towels, six glass cloths, four dusters, and sufficient plates and crockery for luncheon and afternoon tea.

Ridiculous level of reasoning and appalling, shameful lies by the Greek ambassador to the UN. She is trying to convince us that after signing a multibillion arms deal with Israel, the Greek government is somehow also looking after the interests of the Palestinian people.

People frequently ask about the next pandemic (as if the COVID one is all over, but hey). While this great article doesn’t address this directly it talks about emerging infectious diseases and their geographical distribution at the moment. Sobering but essential reading for everyone.

How do the brain's anatomical architecture & functional activity patterns become established during early life? This study of developmental changes in the #brain from perinatal to toddlerhood reveals the organization of networks & #cognitive development @plosbiology.org 🧪 buff.ly/UESbFve
Top: This illustration depicts the evolving spatial pattern of brain structure–function coupling from the perinatal period through infancy. Cortical colors represent regional coupling strength, while the circular arrangement and arrows indicate the temporal progression of early brain development. Bottom: This image separately visualizes the brain’s structural and functional organization. The left panel shows colored white-matter fiber pathways, whereas the right panel displays cortical functional connections as colored nodes and edges embedded within a brain surface. Mechanics of compression-driven morphogenesis Read this Review from our special issue #DevSIextracellular by Jue Yu Kelly Tan and Chii Jou Chan. journals.biologists.com/dev/article/...
Modulation of tissue dynamics by compressive stress during development. (A) Mouse ovarian follicle growth requires contractile theca cell activity and confinement by the extracellular matrix (ECM) to regulate intrafollicular pressure, which, in turn, balances granulosa cell division (yellow) and death (purple). Arrows indicate compressive stress. (B) The Drosophila leg disc is mechanically confined by the peripodial envelope, which induces compressive stress buildup (arrows) and eventually cell apoptosis at the distal tip. (C) Differential planar growth in the Drosophila wing imaginal disc pouch generates a heterogenous mechanical stress field (arrows), with tensile stresses in the peripheral cells (green) and compressive stress in the central cells (blue). These stresses regulate cell division patterns. (D) During Arabidopsis anther lobe formation, faster growth in the inner lobe (single arrows) causes pressure buildup, causing the lobe epidermis to stretch (double arrows). (E) In the zebrafish follicle, rapid expansion of the future micropyle precursor cell mechanically compresses the adjacent granulosa cells, inducing nuclear export of TAZ in the granulosa cells. This restricts micropyle precursor fate to a single cell through mechanical lateral inhibition. (F) In avian skin follicle patterning, dermal cell aggregation generates compressive forces on the overlying epidermis, inducing β-catenin translocation from the membrane to the nucleus and initiating feather follicle fate specification. (G) Cephalic furrow formation during Drosophila gastrulation serves as a pressure-relieving transient fold that dissipates excess compressive stress generated from tissue collisions between the head and trunk (germ band) extension. (H) Growth under confinement generates internal compressive stresses in Escherichia coli biofilms that drive surface buckling and wrinkle formation.

I was obsessed (I know, I know…) with this one for a few months in the ancient times of 1991/2 (I think). Haven’t listen to it since-until today. I can see why I liked it, but I couldn’t find the feeling. (See alt text for details on the Beautiful Pea Green Boat. They are really worth discovering).
Back in the 1980s, Beautiful Pea Green Boat - Ian Williams and Heather Wright - released two albums and several singles on their own Slaughterback label, which became known for their ethereal female vocals and mixture of electro, indie and melodic, neo-classical torch songs. They played a mere half-dozen concerts, but gained quite a reputation in Europe and on the American college radio circuit.

Hello, human geneticist here. There is no scientific basis for attempts to define people in terms of “good” or “bad” genes - these are discredited views in service of racist ideologies. For consensus & concerns of experts in our field, see e.g. this 2020 statement from @geneticssociety.bsky.social:
Statement from the American Society of Human Genetics in 2020, countering the myth of "good genes". It reads as follows:
"Genetics demonstrates that humans cannot be divided into biologically distinct subcategories or races, and any efforts to claim the superiority of humans based on any genetic ancestry have no scientific evidence. Moreover, it is inaccurate to claim genetics as the determinative factor in human strengths or outcomes when education, environment, wealth, and health care access are often more potent factors. There is no factual basis for attempts to define communities or regions of people with "good" or "bad" genes and a century of science has debunked such claims, which can feed discredited views and racist ideologies. Unchecked, unethical application of false genetic "theories" have resulted in past atrocities from forced sterilizations to the Holocaust and can still fuel unethical social policies worldwide today. Over the decades, our field also has reflected on its own role in such now-condemned ideas, and we speak out vocally as a community and as individuals to combat their resurgence.
We must protect and advance the ethical use of genetics and genomics knowledge for the profound good it can realize, including better, more precise healthcare that leverages what we are discovering about human genetic commonality and diversity. The human genetics community dedicates itself to this goal each day, and today we are improving and saving hundreds of thousands of lives. As the ASHG community focuses on realizing the benefits of human genetics and genomics research for people everywhere, we also urge societal attention to address profound educational, economic and health inequalities that fuel differences in human experience and well-being. By pursuing all of these activities, humans can celebrate our common heritage as one people, embrace and fully tap our valued diversity, and help achieve optimal life outcomes for all."
