On the Role of Theory in Biology
Biology is often seen as an experimental science, with theory serving to generalize patterns from empirical data. But history reveals that theory plays a more generative role in discovery itself.

“Bacterial growth is straightforward to measure, complex in origin and exquisitely sensitive to environmental and genetic perturbations.” Fantastic opening sentence to a deeply interesting topic. Never thought about bacterial growth like this before. #MicroSky #Bacteria

Thanks to @hodgman.bsky.social, I read this novel over the past month or so... really haunting and beautiful, and not quite like anything else I can remember reading. It's essentially the story of one man from birth to death, and nothing extraordinary happens.

MGI graduate student Emily Perez, of the Crosson Lab, is studying how bacteria sense and respond to the world around them because these attributes can be used to control their growth. It is especially important for animal and human pathogens such as the one she studies, Brucella.
