Echoes: Pakistan Wants A Film Industry. Does It Have the Crew to Build One?
The recently launched Punjab Film City is like a light at the end of a dark tunnel for the Pakistani film industry, since enough has been discussed about the lack of resources and weak infrastructure in this area. This is, indeed, a healthy step towards enabling local filmmakers to tell their unique stories to the world, and letting the world know about Pakistani culture on its own terms. Pakistan is not devoid of talent. New films with strong stories are released every year, with many also making their way to international film festivals. Experimental filmmaking is something that the region has just begun to explore with its latest release of Zombeid (2026). New streaming projects are on the rise due to the rapidly growing OTT... The Rivals of Amziah King: What if there was a heist movie, but it was about bees, and it also had amazing bluegrass music and a gigantic heart, but was also a revenge thriller and also a hangout comedy? You know, that sort of thing. (On VOD now)

#VerityFilm is my kind of stupid, silly smut. Neo-gothic camp mixes in a ridiculously delirious concoction of psycho-sexual tension & intrigue. Like dumbed-down du Maurier. Anne Hathaway & Dakota Johnson are completely game. I am reborn anew!

Toronto 2026 Review: LOOK BACK Sees Hirokazu Kore-eda Struggle to Bring Tatsuki Fujimoto's Acclaimed Manga to Life
Celebrated filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda returns to the pages of Japanese manga for inspiration once again, unveiling this thoughtful adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s acclaimed 2021 coming-of-age one-shot, Look Back. Reuniting actresses Natsuki Deguchi and Aju Makita, both of whom featured prominently in the director’s 2023 Netflix drama series The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House, the film tells the story of two burgeoning young mangaka, who meet in junior high school and forge a life-long friendship.   Look Back was previously brought to the screen in 2024 by Kiyotaka Oshiyama, whose 58-minute anime was met with rapturous praise and no small degree of surprise. Up until that point, there had been only glimpses of this kind of emotional tenderness in Fujimoto’s work, who was best known... [Read the whole post on screenanarchy.com...]

Generally I don’t love it when homeless people are depicted in movies and shows. It’s frequently offensive stereotype or cheap joke with little nuance in between. But Reacher wordlessly sharing a cheesesteak with a homeless woman on the Philly train? That was sweet, and got to me.

Vlissingen 2026 Review: YOURI, A Great Film About A Great Friendship
The Film by the Sea festival in Vlissingen (a.k.a. Flushing) started this year on a high note with its opening film Youri, by Sander Burger. The festival always has a large section dedicated to literary adaptations, and its main theme this year is "Moed", the Dutch word for courage. Youri fits the section, as it is an adaptation of Jan Brokken's biographical novel "In the House of the Poet" about his friendship with superstar pianist Youri Egerov. It also fits the theme of "Courage", in several parts of the story, some of which are obvious, but some of which I will not spoil. The film starts in Amsterdam in the 1980s, a few years after the famous Russian pianist Youri Egerov has fled to the... [Read the whole post on screenanarchy.com...]

THE UPRISING Review: Brooding Andrew Garfield Leads a Semi-Enthralling Medieval Epic

THE UPRISING Review: Brooding Andrew Garfield Leads a Semi-Enthralling Medieval Epic
For a brief, not-quite-shining moment, Paul Greengrass’ (Captain Phillips, United 93, the Jason Bourne series) latest film, The Uprising, bore a subtitle added by studio marketers, “The Rise of Robin Hood,” only to remove it after howls of outrage from the Terminally Online.   They claimed, not without justification or cause, that the Robin Hood mythos had been adapted and re-adapted so many times in every possible medium as to lose all relevance or, at a minimum, any possible novelty or freshness.   Luckily for them and for any moviegoers venturing out of the oppressive heat into their local multiplex to see The Uprising, Greengrass’ film doesn’t retell the overly-familiar Robin Hood’s story for the 357th time, but instead focuses on a well-documented period in... PRACTICAL MAGIC 2 Review: Second Time Isn't a Charm
When Practical Magic was released in 1998, no one probably thought it would become a special movie for a whole slew of teenage girls and young women. And not just because of witchery, black cats, and pointy hats, even though that’s always fun, unless you’re a woman in the 17th century Massachusetts. The real, practical magic was the fact that, in a pretty male-centered movie era, out came the film about sisterhood, where a romantic storyline was almost an afterthought, Sally and Gillian Owens were each other’s person years before Meredith Grey and Cristina Yang graced our screens, and there was an impressive message about reclaiming your “otherness” and going along with it inside it all. So, there was never a chance that, in the... [Read the whole post on screenanarchy.com...]
