For this month's new horror remake analysis over at @bloody-disgusting.com, I chose Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil's lesser-known South Korean remake: HANDSOME GUYS. What if Tucker & Dale had a demonic twist where each accidental death got Baphomet one step closer to opening the Gates of Hell? I liked it!

Huh. It’s a good pilot! CRYSTAL LAKE has a lot of love for Friday the 13th in visuals, in score, in machete kills. Linda Cardellini, my queen. Gore, baby! But there are already teases to where this series might go and oh boy, I am reaaaaaally curious to see if storytelling can pull off its swings.

I get that Alan Ritchson is Amazon’s golden boy, but does he just live at their studios at this point? Like, he wakes up under a desk and someone throws a new script at him and is goes, “you start filming in 20 minutes!”

My buddy @atommurray.bsky.social's puppet-fantasy short, THE TRAVELER & THE TROLL, is available to watch today. It's under 10 minutes, will make you laugh, keeps Henson's Labyrinth vibes alive, and is pretty darn impressive. Give it a look and tell Adam he done good!

This is niche, but does anyone live in Glendale, CA, or have lived in Glendale? I have a question about Water & Power pricing. We downsized from our last rental, use the same amount of power (in a smaller space for the AC), and yet I'm paying TRIPLE the cost compared to ANYWHERE ELSE I've lived.

COMPLIANCE: I love how I'm middle-of-the-road on the most divisive, feel-bad movie of FF lol. A Screenlife(ish) surveillance-state horror flick that is uncomfortable, bleak, and not for everyone. Conspiracies come to life in repulsive ways, but the cynic in me couldn't look away. #FantasticFest

A highlight of my #FantasticFest: co-hosting RT’s “Fresh Frights” panel! Took the stage with friends I’ve made over the last decade-plus as a critic. A bit of a full-circle moment, since my first ever festival was FF back in 2014. Only fitting it be where I give my first Critics Conversation.

RED SNOW: A feisty Nordic Christmas Horror flick that plays by its own rules (complimentary). Vampires are the focus, but it’s hardly conventional. A darkly comedic, grab-bag approach gleefully paints the snow red with blood, while creature elements add a nice visual ick. A treat! #FantasticFest

HALF: A half-human, half-vampire flick with action choreography by Very Tri Yulisman (The Raid 2, The Night Comes for Us). Kicks enough ass, but is a thin experience that doesn't match the greatness of Yulisman's other works. Points for using a handheld juicer ... that way. #FantasticFest

PATHETIC FALLACY: My favorite Adam Egypt Mortimer by a country mile. Bizarre, renegade, punk-rock poeticism about life that swings a mean axe. Kid Cudi shines as a grief-stricken widower who Mortimer guides through a psychedelic slasher concept. Unexpected, intimate, and awesome. #FantasticFest

PLAY HOUSE: Nicolas Curcio turns his inaugural Fantastic Pitches win into a creepy home-invasion riff. James Urbaniak slam-dunks Creepypasta vibes as a VHS Mr. Rogers type, but this isn't a Buddy or Mr. Crocket rewrite. It twists, it turns, and it delivers. #FantasticFest

THE CYCLE: Jordan Downey's crime procedural creature-feature boasts his advocacy for practical effects, and for that, we're grateful. The first investigative thriller half takes its time getting to the action, but once unleashed, the film earns its praise. A backloaded flick for the patient viewer.

IN A VIOLENT NATURE 2: Secret's out; Johnny's back! As someone who thinks the original is just fine, ditto here. More walking, more ultraviolent slasher kills, more dead air. Director Nate Wilson runs the same playbook again, with a slight narrative bump (but worse performances?) #FantasticFest
