Disco Elysium is a great game because I’ve done two playthroughs, yet every post I see is a spoiler.

hehe claude 3.1b can't do 2 digit multiplication. It got this wrong, but got 12 x 12 correct. To calculate this, I'll use a multiplication algorithm. The result of 76 * 84 is: **6376**

On the math research end, we get lots of claims of breakthroughts from companies running closed models and not disclosing all of the inputs into those breakthroughs, because they are incentivized to make it look like their system ("the AI") did it all on its own. >>

very interesting and good thread. i think both illusionism and pragmatism provide lenses that can help people think about this specific statement. leaning towards the latter, i see little value in believing that AI thinks like I do, but even less value in arguing the point :).

Yeah. Interesting that I used to call it "Dao de Ching" which I think is a mix up of two different westernizations of the name. So I actually googled it just for this purpose and tried a few variations. But I don't doubt that it may still be in play as I did not rigorously test.

Yes. I was testing my env to make sure it worked and asked for the first line of the tao te ching and didn’t recognize its response. I googled it and it was a quote from Mao. I tried again to explicitly say by Laozi and it returned the exact same thing so then I stopped using it 🤷.

Counterpoint: DeepSeek gave me Mao quotes when I asked for Laozi quotes.

i kinda got switched off of plato after reading the republic but linking Piranesi to ancient greece does lend itself to a kinder reading than I gave it.

For no reason at all I just want to shout out Paul Maxwell's Van Leuwen in Aliens (1986) who had such a small role but absolutely nailed the cold cruelty of Weyland-Yutani and capitalism in general. His delivery of "for reasons unknown" set up Weaver's fiery response perfectly.
