@amerrill2.bsky.social There’s a Cartoon Planet skit I remember a lot, but I haven’t seen it since the 90s and no idea if it’s online. It had live-action Space Ghost (probably you) entering a restaurant in fast motion, ordering a sandwich, eating it whole, and leaving. Do you remember recording it?

@amerrill2.bsky.social Do you have any insight about a 1995 interstitial series in an SGC2C like format, but featuring Top Cat called “Top Cat Live!”? Articles from that time say it was going to air on “International CN’s,” but so far there’s a single ep. online ripped from an Italian channel.

@ghostplanet.bsky.social A photo of the version of the team with the Chilean colors I mentioned in this other post, shared by Wolf O’Donnel on the Hanna-Barbera Forever Facebook group. I think this scan is from the UK version of the magazine (the Chilean edition was in Spanish), but I can be wrong.
An illustration of a soccer team made up with Cartoon Network Characters, most wearing red shirts and blue shorts. In the back row it features Atom Ant, Shaggy, Bamm-Bamm, Johnny Bravo, Magilla Gorilla, Dick Dastardly. On the front row it features Squiddly Diddly, Atom Ant, Top Cat, Hong Kong Phooey, Scooby-Doo, Fred Flintstone and Dexter as the trainer. It features the heading “The winning team!” and has a logo that is a mix of the Cartoon Network logo with a soccer ball that in the middle it says “98”.

Maybe it was something from Europe, or just a "pilot" version of the TV bumpers that was sent to the magazine by mistake. An additional image I have of the Cartoon Network 98 logo (never re-used for later stunts) only because I think is nifty.

This one intrigued me a lot because I don't think it was made up for the magazine as it features WB characters which weren't used on it (including Pinky and the Brain, who weren't airing on CNLA yet and for some reason are at "human" size, unlike Atom Ant on the regular TV team)...

A print ad shows an illustration of a soccer team lineup made up of Fred Flintstone, Johnny Bravo, Lloyd Christmas, Harry Dunne, The Mask, Dick Dastardly, Squiddly Diddly, the Slag Brothers, Atom Ant (he's barely visible, holding a ball), Droopy, the two stupid dogs, and Dexter; most of them wearing the Argentine national team jersey (except for Manotas and Dexter, who are the goalkeeper and coach, respectively). On the sides, there's text in Spanish that says, "Our team is like Argentina's, bringing joy to 35,000,000 people / Good luck to the Argentinian players!" In one corner, there's the Cartoon Network logo mixed with a soccer ball that has a "98" in the middle.

In general, I think Scooby shouldn't need an explanation for speaking, and that's the joke, especially if the series as a whole is relatively grounded. You could even assume it's all in Shaggy's mind.

Historian Thad K. was a friend of Clay Crocker and has said that the entire team of SGC2C (understood as the people who actually wrote, acted, and animated for it) gave CN almost two decades of hit after hit and helped to shape cable TV as a whole, yet the channel screwed them over big time.

@ghostplanet.bsky.social A review of Space Ghost Coast to Coast written by Chilean critic and television host Juan Andrés Salfate in a Chilean magazine “Rock & Pop” in the 90s. I added an English translation of sorts. Found by my friend @barometro.bsky.social
A photo of a detail from a column in a Spanish-language magazine discussing the Space Ghost Coast to Coast TV show. It adorns a screenshot of the show.Animation / SPACE GHOST / A Nerd's Revenge
If one of the most nauseating actors in American Westerns became President of the United States, then no one should be surprised by how far Space Ghost has come.

He's a minimally developed superhero, used to fill the pupils of some children in the late 70s, before channel surfing. Even for its creator studio, Hanna-Barbera, Space Ghost was nothing more than a formality. Just another cartoon.

But let's take a trip down memory lane. Space Ghost traveled through space in a spaceship that was a poor imitation of a Concorde. He was accompanied by two kids and a monkey. The protagonist's powers were limited to flying, becoming invisible (hence the epithet "Ghost"), and firing beams that stunned or vaporized, depending on the intensity, from cumbersome wristbands on both arms.

Bulging from the waist up, wearing a white suit and a black mask that barely revealed his eyes and mouth, this champion of justice deserved about as much respect as a professional wrestler. But that was in the past. Now, he hosts one of the most mind-bending talk shows of the decade. "Space Ghost Coast to Coast" features well-known figures from the entertainment world, ranging from box-office stars like Leonardo DiCaprio to hard rock singers like Mike Patton. And no matter who he interviews, Space Ghost puts them all through the same sieve of irreverence. And when their answers become banal, he leaves them talking to themselves with a loud yawn. The show's set design is roughly as follows: the Phantom sits behind a 21st-century desk (according to the imagination of the 1970s) and interviews real people via a television screen beside him, which only shows the guests in close-up.

A few feet away, seemingly to refute the host's advice, is a mutant insect named Zorak. Farther away, in a broadcast booth, is another character, Moltar, who spends his time rewatching old 1980s shows like CHiPs and The Dukes of Hazzard. There's also another individual whose face resembles the mask of an African tribe at war. The three of them mock everything and everyone who appears on screen (Backstreet Boys, Mike Patton, Courtney Love, Bee Gees, Ultraman, David Duchovny, and the Beastie Boys, among many others). And on other occasions, they meet in a café within the same studio, where they discuss current events such as the Tibetan Freedom Concert or the latest movie releases. One of the most remarkable aspects of Space Ghost Coast to Coast is that it's a true achievement in the art of recycling. This show doesn't feature new animation; instead, it uses the character's familiar poses and gestures from the original series against a different background, though not necessarily more complex or polished.

And the truth is, no one can remain indifferent to this phenomenon of anti-television, which, therapeutically, also serves as a Dadaist experience.

J. A. S.
(Space Ghost Coast to Coast has aired since 1994, Monday through Friday, around 11:00 p.m., and Saturdays at 10:00 p.m., on Cartoon Network).

Thinking in obvious differences, a common one is that the first half uses mostly 2D animated checkerboard patterns, but the later these are mostly CGI looking with bezels and more custom per show. Bugs and Daffy Tonight was renamed The Bugs and Daffy Show with a new opening, among other things.

@ghostplanet.bsky.social Usually online people refers to most 1992-1998 CN bumpers only as the “checkerboard” era, although I also think there’s a noticeable difference between the bumpers before 1995 and later, so it probably should be at least split in two “eras” or something. Thoughts?

Turner's 5th: The Cartoon Network
By JEFFRY SCOTT Cox News Service
ATLANTA-At noon today, several million Americans were to have the chance to listen inside the visionary mind of Ted Turner, and what they'd hear is this: "Sploing! Boing! Bam! Splat!"
That's the signature sound of Turn- er's latest 24-hour cable channel, the Cartoon Network. In a private cere- mony Thursday, Turner himself will launch the channel with a push of an Acme dynamite plunger on the front lawn of Turner Broadcasting System Inc.'s facility on Techwood Drive.
The plunger will spark a fuse, which will explode a barrel of colored chicken feathers and confetti. Then, on a huge TV screen will pop the pic- ture: a cartoon character named Droopy Dog introducing the world to Turner's new "cartoon universe."
But, for Atlantans, it's a universe they'll have to wait a while to tune into.
For the first time, Atlanta's cable mogul is launching a cable network- his fifth-that won't be carried by a single cable system in his hometown. Nationally, the picture isn't much bet- ter.
Only four of the top 10 markets- New York, Philadelphia, Washington and Detroit-are tuning in. Nation- wide, the total number of Cartoon Net- work subscribers is a slim 3 million. Privately, some Turner executives said they're disappointed by the Car- toon Network's slow launch. Publicly, the company said the channel is about where Turner expected it to be when - it was announced six months ago.

When people talk about modern Looney Tunes stuff, they often say "they are finally reusing the wacky Daffy personality from Clampett after years of only using the asshole one from Jones", but I think in current stuff Daffy is even MORE of an asshole than anything in the whole golden age.
