CO₂ at Mauna Loa just reached a monthly average of >430 ppm for the first time. That's possibly higher than in over 3.3 million years. The global RATE of increase is off the chart. It's hard to exaggerate how unprecedented this is!

I am appalled by the ASM's decision to remove DEI content from their website. Here is my email to the American Society for Microbiology, @ASM.org asking them to put everything back as it was. If you are an ASM member, please consider writing them.
Subject: Appalled by the decision to remove DEI content on the ASM website

Dear ASM Leadership,

For over 20 years, I have been a proud member of the ASM, a professional society that not only publishes outstanding microbiology research but also supports diversity, equity, and inclusion within our field.

I am deeply disappointed and angered by ASM’s recent decision to remove online content that highlighted and celebrated non-white, female, and LGBTQ+ scientists. Rather than unquestioningly complying with vague governmental directives to halt and delete inclusion efforts, ASM should have taken a principled stand and kept this content accessible.

Since ASM is not a federal agency and derives most of its funding from publishing and membership fees, this decision to remove content that so many of us support is both disheartening and perplexing.

I have read ASM’s statement following the recent STAT article, which claims that no content was deleted but is instead "under review." I must ask: under review for what purpose? Will the language be altered? Will key aspects be removed?

I urge ASM to demonstrate integrity and restore the content in its original form.

As BlueSky user Len Kurland worded it nicely, this is the perfect time for Microbial Resistance.

Kind regards,

Elisabeth Bik

Well the award for most cowardly, boot-lickingest academic society has squarely gone to the American Society of Microbiology, who has taken down features of various non-white scientists. Absolutely pathetic behavior. Those articles are now coming up as “under review”. Truly sickening cowardice here.

I have seen a lot of "news" stories about the current California fires as natural disasters. Southern California ecosystems are fire prone, but this event is a direct result climate change and management neglect. We need to change how we view these events, and the press is not helping.

An important statement by the @uofguelph.bsky.social CSA. “What actions, if any, does the UofG plan to take to show graduate students they are welcome, wanted, and supported here?” Full statement here: csaonline.ca/administrati... #ISupportTheUofGGradStudents
A screenshot of a statement by the VSA at UofG. It reads “ in the University of Guelph 2022 to 2027 strategic plan, the university committed to “increasing the number of students enrolled in research based graduate programs end” and stated that “graduate students are key to their reputation as a top comprehensive, and research intensive university” however, the actions taken this year, reflect a systematic disregard for graduate students best interests. A screen shot of a csa statement that reads “ these decisions, made without a parent, student consultation, have left many students uninformed and unprepared. Research links financial stress to performance surveys show that 81% of food bank users at U of G are graduate students - 74% of them international students. the message many graduate students are hearing from university of Guelph is that they are unwelcome, unwanted, and unsupported here.

Generally we think of alt-text as the domain of those with accessibility needs. However alt-text is useful for many reasons, which benefit your viewers, as well as you, the creator!
An infographic. There are six panels.

1. "Slow internet. Alt text is shown in place of unloaded images." a drawing shows a phone with poor signal, and alt text is visible where the image should have loaded.

2. "Findabillity. Alt text helps to search content." A drawing shows someone searching 'dog with banana' and a post is shown underneath without the words 'dog' or 'banana'. It is implied to be part of the alt text.

3. "Screen readers. Alt is read out to people using text-to-speech software". There is a drawing of the output a screen-reader would show when viewing an image with alt text on bluesky.

4. "Translation. Alt text can be translated". A drawing shows a post being translated. The alt text is also translated into german.

5. "Readability. Text in images can be made legible" There is a drawing of some truly awful handwriting inside a speech bubble. The alt text clarifies what the text is supposed to say.

6. "Disambiguation. Description helps clarify intent." There is a drawing of a post with a picture of a creature. This is styled after the famous optical illusion of a rabbit and a duck. The alt text clarifies that the animal is a rabbit. It definitely looks more like a duck.
