We are recruiting a new graduate student to SUNY ESF to work on a project examining how invasive quagga mussels influence lake trout survival. This project involves a fun mixture of mussels, fish, aquatic biogeochemistry, and microbes!

A really incredible day of science and fun at the NYS Fair on Sunday when the Chemistry Department was at the ESF booth! Our student volunteers designed science activities for visitors to participate in, shared about their research, and let kids and their families know why they love being at ESF!

New preprint! This one is actually from my class! We did metagenomic sequencing on a Winogradsky column. In my Microbial Biochemistry class, the students learned to assemble and analyze the MAGs, directly applying what they learned in lecture to make predictions about their organism’s metabolism. 🧵

Science, public health, & infectious disease work are under attack & ASM chose to remove microbiology from their name. Would love to know the consulting fees for this redesign & how the $$ could have been used to support members (small conference grant program, travel awards, fellowships, etc.).
