There's actually a very interesting analysis I saw in a book somewhere about how The Exorcist can be read as a reaction to 60's counterculture and the women's movement. I just can't remember the book, unfortunately.

I mean I personally think the only reason the writers would use TADC is because they're old fogeys picking a random popular series the "young folks" are into. It's what a lot of cop shows do, it's always hokey and out of touch.

I feel like back in the 60's, the big reason you could get away with using alien races as a metaphor for marginalized groups was because there were a lot of limits to exploring those themes anyway. Obviously that's changed nowadays and it feels more cowardly to keep doing that.

I'll admit, this is a film that's very difficult to watch in parts and I can see why it'd turn some people off, but it's also a fascinating examination of South Korean history, of innocence crushed by the passage of time, all with a fucking amazing lead performance by Sul Kyung-gu.
