I visited Nantes, the birthplace of Jules Verne, and got the theme tune to 80 Days Around the World stuck in my head for four whole days. Your turn! www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nGr...

Very exciting email from the French train I've booked to travel on tomorrow: "Nous partons ensemble demain et sommes ravis que vous nous ayez choisis.Vous allez aimer la grande vitesse à la française!" I bet!

My week has been very much improved by watching this video several times, the entire premise of which seems to be that it is good fun to get drunk in Leamington Spa and eat sweets. Go on the kids, and may I never have to camp next to you at a festival. youtu.be/xv6j3f65MWs?...

This week I have been enjoying 'The Spirit of Radio' by Rush, which I mostly know from St Etienne sampling it. But some of the lyrics are about hearing music on a timeless wavelength - just like 'It's All Right' by the Pet Shop Boys - and they also quote 'The Sound of Silence' by Simon & Garfunkel!

I've read quite a few good posts about Dolly Parton today, but liked this one the best.

Still can't hear 'Need You Tonight' by INXS and Michael Hutchence growling "There's something about you, girl, that makes me sweat" without retorting "Well go and have a bath you Australian perv!". Thanks to the writers of Smash Hits 1989 for keeping me on the straight and narrow all these years.

Trying to remember today that saying "Of course England won't win the final!" is not injecting a healthy dose of realism into office chat but actually bums people out a bit.

Heartwarming stuff! I will be forcing the Gen Z Hayley Williams stans in my office to listen to 'Jordan: The Comeback' in its entirety tomorrow. stereogum.com/2502888/watc...

Watch Hayley Williams & Romy Cover Prefab Sprout In London
Hayley Williams’ first solo tour is going just dandy. The Paramore leader has brought out Josh Scogin, Jason Isbell, Rachel Brown, Jenny Lewis, and more, and last night in London she was joined by Rom...

A lengthy meditation on what it might be like to be Andy Bown from Status Quo is exactly what I want to read. I've been intrigued by the lesser-known members of the band since I watched the doc Hello Quo. The feisty Alan Quo was the breakout star, but it turns out Andy Quo also has plenty going on!

All the young people from work went to see Kim Gordon last night, but I already had a ticket to see Michaela Strachan talking about her life on the telly so I think it's clear who the coolest person in the office really is!

Recent second-hand record purchases. My philosophically inclined co-worker likes to refer to this as "the duality of Jo".
Two records: a Cliff Richard live album and Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast.

I went to this gig, with about 50 people in all, and it was about the most magical thing that happened in 2025. I would really like to talk about Edward Barton and Jane every day.

I wore my delightful owl jumper to work today and I am pretty annoyed that the entire office did not down tools and spend the day talking about how great it is.

I am grumpy that most of the obituaries of Sly Dunbar go on about him working on some Bob Dylan album and don't start with the headline information that he produced 'Hey Baby' by No Doubt, a song so awesome that I own it on CD single.

Victoria Coren-Mitchell dissing the NY Times Connections game on Only Connect was *not* cool. I love both games in their different ways! And it's not like she writes it anyway. Tsk!

Pleased to report that Freakier Friday is good not bad! I laffed throughout and also enjoyed its insights into working in the music industry and being British.

I consider myself fairly well-versed in excellent pop music of the 80s, but I have ONLY JUST discovered that the album Pyromania by Def Leppard is entirely brilliant - maybe even better than Hysteria! Now I must tell everyone I know!

I finally got around to trying Dubai chocolate today but its luxurious sheen was somewhat tarnished when I remembered the Guardian recipe for making your own version with shredded wheat.

The young people in my office are playing the School Of Rock soundtrack and singing "You're not hardcore! Unless you live hardcore!", which makes up for them being somewhat baffled by the greatest hits of Ash earlier.

The young people at work went to a gig in Bermondsey last night. "She didn't come on till quarter to eleven, but apparently the first support act was a Lime bike."
