Ever see these species? We’re looking for volunteers for the Non-Estuarine Waterbird Survey this winter. Sign up➡️ www.bto.org/webs-news All you need to do is walk your chosen survey sector along the coastline once between 1 December & 31 January & count the birds you see. #UKBirding
The image is split into three horizontal sections each featuring a different bird. At the top is a Sanderling foraging along the shoreline. It’s a small wading bird with a black bill and legs, white underparts and face, and grey head and upperparts. The middle section features a Turnstone walking showing its bright orange legs, white underparts, and brown-black upperparts. The bottom frame shows a Purple Sandpiper standing on a sloping rock. It’s a medium-sized and stocky wading bird with orange legs, grey-brown upper plumage and white-cream below with a downcurved beak with orange base and black tip.

Perfect conditions to survey the lower #Conwy estuary. Several Grey Plovers, two Kingfishers, Bar-tailed Godwit and Guillemot were unusual here, as was a Sandwich Tern for October. Good counts of Eider (10), Sanderlings (99), Ringed Plovers (61) and Little Egret (14). #BirdingWales

Cloddiau (sing. clawdd) are one of my favourite features of the countryside in Cymru. An earth bank, dressed with stone on each side - a field boundary in which plants can grow. We walked alongside this one, near Bontnewydd today, that has some impressive oaks growing from its core.
An Oak tree, probably coppiced at some stage, growing from a clawdd, the earth bank dressed with rectangular stones, below which plants grow from the roadside verge.

Agree, all the evidence is that these movements are fairly local in response to failure of acorn crop. It's why I'm puzzled they're not moving in number up here, where the oaks are empty.

Home past people heading into @plaidcymru.bsky.social conference. Wonder how many delegates noticed #UKNature?

Three species new to Wales here, bringing the total to 15 since 2020. With four years to go, that's already surpassed the total for the whole of the previous decade. Look forward to reading the write-ups in the forthcoming @welshbirdsrarities.bsky.social report. #BirdingWales Details in AltText
Chart showing the number of species recorded on the Welsh List at the start of each decade from 1900 to 2030, although the final point shows data only from 2020-25. It is based on species recognised in Avilist 2025, so may change when taxonomic changes are published later this autumn. The List grew slowly from 276 species in 1900 to 298 in 1950, but has subsequently averaged 20 species per decade. The 1960s saw the greatest number added (32), many of which were recorded by Bardsey and Skokholm Bird Observatories.

Glorious day. Plenty of Clouded Yellows, Painted Ladies and Skylarks flying along the coast at Pen Cilan. Wheatear and White Wagtail were the only migrant birds, but good to find several Grey Seal pups on two beaches. Waved to @bardseybirdobs.bsky.social and @bardseyben.bsky.social's Mum!
Me, wearing a red t-shirt and grey shorts and holding my binoculars by my waist, stood on the coastal path above Aberdaron, with green bushes behind and a grassy slope beyondTwo Grey Seal pups and an adult on a stony beach below the coast path. The adult female, mottled grey and beige below and dark grey above, is nuzzling one of the pups, which was probably born in the last few days. Both the pups have white fur, the other is lying on its back at the base of the cliff - it was alive, we saw it move!A stand of heather in the foreground, around 30% of it still in flower, against a backdrop of blue sea and sky, with a headland and the St Tudwal islands in the background Ynys Enlli/Bardsey, an island at the end of Pen Llyn. From the northeast side, it looks like a huge whale in the water, with steep cliffs. The surrounding sea is deep blue.
