yes, good point. I would still ask roughly the same question as something was still going on that wasn't just heat, but with more precision. Anyway, this article was good www.science.org/content/arti...

Aha, I think I got a good article www.science.org/content/arti... It ejected minerals that seem to have been good for photosynthesis.

I was wondering the same (and I really ought to know this), I read the Wiki page, it makes sense to me why temperatures dropped but not why CO2 levelled out. I don't see any mention for instance that it released any minerals that reacted with CO2.

I bet the committee are embarrassed that last year's winner turned out to be a big fan of his and gave her prize to him. And have been careful not to pick one who'll follow suit. They laid the "international rule of law" part a bit thick. (I hope you don't mind if I skip the video of him. UGH)

We fortunately found out in advance, because we were taking our cats to the vet for their checkup and they were NOT fond of public transport. Also, fortunately, when it was time for me to go screaming my head off to the labour ward, the driver didn't roar off and leave me ...

Been reminded that 3 years ago I was in antenatal classes and they told us that, when it's time to take a taxi to hospital, tell them in advance you're in labour so the driver isn't surprised and won't zoom off and leave you. We soon discovered that taxis used clueless AI chatbots, so we couldn't.

Sort of wonder how tankies can still sustain their stance of “Russia is the victim of western aggression” when Trump clearly wants Russia to win and happily enables Putin’s genocidal aims towards Ukraine.

I know the feed is bleak, but please have a brand new lamb picture. I wasn’t expecting this one, and he might be a premie, but his mom is great and he is eating well.

Poor kid is sick. Monday and Wednesday she seemed a bit poorly, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday fine - now early Saturday morning much worse and crying. This is one hell of a weird bug whatever it is.

Aaahhhh, I thought you were talking about just the one day. Logic, brain, logic. Weirdly, I sleep better with the light on at night. Bizarre. But that's sure not the same as constant daylight.

Thank you, I'd been thinking I ought to read your books! (Brain is too fallen-apart for reading at present - hopefully this is temporary) This is definitely a reason to :-)

Hah, I had wondered a few times in my life what Germans with that surname do - whether they'd get it changed or just grin and bear it or what. I hope the surviving members of his family don't keep his values going.

I'm not sorry either. It doesn't get dark at all in Stockholm for a couple of months a year and that means when there's a heatwave there's no relief from it at night. We had lashing rain and wind all day and it was miserable - but a relief after all the droughts.

I wasn't allowed to go to school until I was 12. No, I wasn't homeschooled. I wasn't anything. Just left sitting around in the house. Books and sister for company. If I met other children, they envied me getting out of work. But it was like prison. I felt I was being raised to be unfit for people.

Alice Sheppard @penguingalaxy.bsky.social · 19h
It's like when people say of a convicted violent person, "hope he gets r*ped in prison" (sorry to bring up that vile topic, but we've heard it all before). And I think NO. Not because I want only nice stuff for him, but because the world doesn't need more people who do or are OK with that stuff.

Alice Sheppard @penguingalaxy.bsky.social · 22h
Yeah absolutely. Even if it didn't act as if it was tortured. The fact that the person is being horrible is important, it indicates what they're like and what their values are, it gets them used to bullying - and is a predictor of how they'd behave to sentient beings sooner or later.

Having grown up in Wales, I can testify that if you are actually worried about your culture and history being under threat, the thing to do is write poetry and songs, perform plays, tell stories and organise festivals, not just sit around whining.

Reading to my daughter is WONDERFUL! She hated it when she was a baby, but once she could pick up books, she began to just love it. Is there anything more incredible than a 2-year-old who will sit on the floor, raid the bookshelf and pick up books and actually look through them? We did that! 🤩😍📚

This thread makes an important point about capitalism, patriarchy and care work. But also this dude is missing the whole point of parenthood. Reading stories is one of the best parts! We managed to keep bedtime stories going for a ridiculously long time and it was a favourite part of my day.

Does anyone else keep a wet towel in a bag in their freezer? We've only used it twice in the last year, once for an ankle and yesterday for my head, but it's been great. You don't have to chuck out wasted frozen peas.

Yesterday I managed to injure my head in a really stupid way and was kind of woozy all afternoon. Also got annoyed with husband, but he has (much much much) more than made up for everything by doing almost all the childcare so I could rest. It's really helped, I think.

Your family are awesome. Ha, I read a few "adult" books as a kid and found them tedious. And I've still got my old HPs from 2000-2007 back at my parents' house. If my kid ever wants to read them, well, they were fun and I was fond of them. They're probably also for sale second hand somewhere :)

Whew, head pain has gone down! I managed to give myself a small head injury earlier and have been out of action and even considering going to the emergency department for a lot of the day as I was dizzy and drowsy. But feeling better now and was able to play aeroplanes with kid before bed.

Inasmuch as this is the case, we should read any assertion that AI can do what we do, teach how we teach, as a profound insult and the dehumanization of the very areas these technologies claim to approximate.

So here’s where I am going to lose the empiricists and the analytics: the things that make us human, the things that make replicating our loved ones via AI an affront to their memory, are the same things that enable us to make art, to teach, to experience.
