Place is everything, arguably, in memoir. I’ve been feeling stuck in my WIP since my mother died 2021. My last remaining aunt got in touch after decades. She and my mother were estranged. She’s filling me in on mysteries: my mother, grandmother, where I was born. It’s everything.
1930s photo of grandparents on the steps of newly purchased first home in southwestern Pennsylvania town, Coal Country. Grandfather immigrant from Wales, sixth grade education, worked in mines, dressed in a suit. Grandmother, one of five children raised by widow who cleaned the priest rectory in town for a living, immigrant from English orphanage, wearing a stylish dress. Likely the nicest clothing they owned and would for years. They are smiling. They look proud and happy. The house is brick. A somewhat scraggly tree or tall rose bush, sprawling over the window in the background.
