Don't ask me about untranslatability
There seems to be a great deal of interest in so-called untranslatable words. I have seen and heard several conversations and interviews in which translators are asked to provide examples of words that can’t be translated; some translators have obliged, while others have pushed back, however gently, against the very concept of untranslatability. I have been interviewed twice, and one more interview is coming out this fall. I haven’t been asked so far about untranslatable Portuguese words, and I

Finished reading The Cracks We Bear by Catalina Infante in Michelle Mirabella's translation. Compact and powerful, this novel is about mothers and daughters and much more. Michelle's beautiful, sure-handed translation has been shortlisted for ALTA's 2026 Spain-USA Foundation Translation Award.

"It is true that I clung to this man with all the desperation and hope of a castaway. No, I didn't save myself, if that's what you're wondering. The bottom of my boat is splintered, and every now and then it lists under the force of unstable currents, but the storm has lifted, and here with you, I am groping, trying to put some order to all these turbulent emotions, searching for a reconciliation with our fragile universe." Quote from the story "Flesh and Agony," in The Book of Affects by Marilia Arnaud, translated by Ilze Duarte

"I miss the breeze that used to blow from the sea, the mild wind on my body during my daily walks. There has been no wind for a long while. Maybe something strange is happening in the city, but I can't figure out what it is because besides the absence of the neighbors, the trampled indigent on the ground, and the sea of dead fish on the beach--also deserted--everything is perfectly fine." "Dromedaries on the Sidewalk," a short story by Brazilian writer Claudia Nina, translated by Ilze Duarte.

Here's an article I wrote a few years ago for @hopscotch-tr.bsky.social on AI and literary translation. This discussion will only become more relevant in the coming years. I invite you to read all the articles in the forum: hopscotchtranslation.com/2023/09/19/s... #writingisforhumans #translation
As the #namethetranslator movement has been successful in highlighting the importance of acknowledging translators for the essential work they do, so can a widespread movement succeed in raising awareness of teh type of work involved in literary translation and the reasons why only we--humans, writers, artists--can do it. My article on AI and translation in Hopscotch Translation.

if you’re trying to “save time” as a writer by using AI, i suggest you find another profession. it takes time to write well, time to write exciting books. it takes time to write one good poem. i’ve spent years on a single poem. the time spent learning one’s craft is everything
