KU is closing their daycare and now Fort Hays is closing their Natural History Museum. Administrators are citing shortage of fund while celebrating their brand new multi-million dollar football stadiums. #priorities

PREP scholars can work with any KU faculty. My lab would love to host a post-bacc to work on neuronal signaling in a cnidarian model system.

We are super excited to see this published. Podocoryna is a wonderful jellyfish model. Closely related to the model organism Hydractinia, easy to culture in the lab, and now a high quality genome!

Free college is not such a radical concept. When I went to UCLA in the 80's, tuition and fees were $800/quarter. There is no way my family could afford to send me to college with today's rates. I am absolutely certain I would not be where I am today without this opportunity.

NSF RaMP and NIH PREP are wonderful models but are now defunct. Other cohort models where post baccs are funded by their PI but the professional development training is centralized - such as the Propel program are filling this gap.

A post bacc is a TRAINEE and as such should be given some level of ownership in their research. In addition they should be provided mentoring and professional development opportunities to help them launch into grad school.

A post bacc can be a critical stage in a career pathway towards an independent researcher. Many don’t have the opportunity to be exposed to research as an undergrad and want more exposure before applying to grad school.

🧬 New genome alert! We’ve generated a chromosome-level assembly for the hydrozoan Podocoryna. With both polyp and free-swimming medusa stages, Podocoryna is a powerful model for exploring the evolution of complex traits in early animal lineages.

This is the AI engine in Meta platforms like Insta and FB. This word is Latin for hand, and also the portmanteau that @pcart.bsky.social and I made up for the one-stop orefice of cnidarians. So if what comes out of it is more partly digested goo, rather than handy, the name remains apt.
