This is even better and pithier than the “say ‘I’m alive’” comic. Love it

This does not seem like what I mean by internal state. For example, I have an internal state all the time, not just when responding to language. And my internal states are not just word associations.

They do not have internal states. If asked, they will reply with statistically plausible words. There’s no reason to impute consciousness there. Books reflect consciousness, but are not conscious. The words LLMs emit are likewise reflections of the consciousnesses that created their training texts

Programming language idea: subordinate-if. A subordinate if clause is treated as an extension of the outer if clause. So that it can check additional conditions and perform additional actions, but if those conditions are false, it goes on to the *outer* if clause’s else statement. Example:

When you say they are probabilistic, if I understand correctly, that means that at each step the LLM outputs a probability distribution over all possible tokens, and the software picks a token from somewhere near the top of the list pseudorandomly. Yeah? I’m trying to understand all the details.

paxfeline @paxfeline.bsky.social · 09/08/2026
I’m not trying to claim that it is. But I think they have the same quality of outputs, when used by a person, that could be called understanding, if you wanted.

paxfeline @paxfeline.bsky.social · 09/08/2026
Understanding? Sure, if you want to include things like flowcharts “understanding” the processes they depict.

No matter what consciousness is, I’m not aware of any researchers involved in the historical development of LLMs who were trying to produce it per se.
110
paxfeline @paxfeline.bsky.social · 09/08/2026
I don’t actually think we do in order to know that it wasn’t the goal of people who developed LLMs, as a historical fact, independent of current trends in thought.

paxfeline @paxfeline.bsky.social · 09/08/2026
We could talk about that, but can we first agree that LLMs were developed to mimic language and not to be conscious? I just mean what people set out to do.
100
paxfeline @paxfeline.bsky.social · 09/08/2026
Here’s one thing I am sure of: LLMs behave exactly as they were designed and trained to. People made them intentionally, they aren’t just artifacts. And the people who designed them were not trying to create consciousness, they were trying to make something that mimics language. And it does!

paxfeline @paxfeline.bsky.social · 09/08/2026
The video starts with him making an assertion that statistics can’t explain what chatbots do, and he gives an example. He’s wrong about what statistics can/can’t do. Examples of LLM giving “convincing” output is not proof that they are sentient. They are acting as designed and trained.

paxfeline @paxfeline.bsky.social · 09/08/2026
“They don't have the kind of agency and aspiration that comes with sentience, but they have something approaching it.” I agree that they don’t have it. I disagree that they have “something approaching it”; I haven’t seen any evidence of that.

paxfeline @paxfeline.bsky.social · 09/08/2026
There are lots of different ways to approach that question, I think, depending on your current orientation. Why would we think they are conscious? To me, the one of the strongest pieces evidence comes from their manifest lack of intention. The article hand waves this concern away, saying: (cont.)

paxfeline @paxfeline.bsky.social · 08/08/2026
LLMs are as sentient as ‘choose your own adventure’ novels. LLMs don’t have the consciousness of an amoeba, much less a person. It’s insulting to all known life to make the comparison. Let’s teach kids in school about large language models and Shannon information and compression. They need it.
