This is *not* the result of "the success of Mahmood's reforms", but of earlier measures/other factors. Her proposals could make it considerably *worse* in future years. A few other points linked below.. archive.ph/0psJ8
Falling migration numbers could cost the chancellor as much as £7bn in fiscal headroom as he writes his first budget, The Times has been told.

Government insiders believe that John Healey, who already faced an uphill battle to balance the books next month, is likely to have an even bigger challenge after immigration significantly undershot projections from the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR).

The Institute for Fiscal Studies think tank estimated last month that the success of Shabana Mahmood’s reforms, which have seen net migration cut to the low hundreds of thousands, could cost Healey some £4bn.

Labour sources familiar with the budget process, however, said that the figure was now closer to £6.5bn. The OBR’s migration forecasts have been consistently higher than real numbers in recent years.

Treasury officials, who have long expected Mahmood’s reforms to cause a hit to headroom, described the number as “pure speculation” but did not deny that Healey would have to contend with a larger funding gap than expected because of falling migration

Actually the middle of the channel is international waters, hence the Russian’s having a boat or sub there quite regularly, but I think this occurred in French water.

Weren’t the people saying they weren’t terrorists relying on the fact they hadn’t committed or threatened to commit any of the specific actions under the Terrorism Act? Well… Four out of five of boxes ticked now. You may now proceed to proscribing Patriot Platform.
The Terrorism Act 2000 defines terrorism, both in and outside of the UK, as the use or threat of one or more of the actions listed
below, and where they are designed to influence the government, or an international governmental organisation or to intimidate the public. The use or threat must also be for the purpose of advancing a political, religious, racial or ideological cause.
The specific actions included are:
• serious violence against a person;
• serious damage to property;
• endangering a person's life (other than that of the person committing the action);
• creating a serious risk to the health or safety of the public or a section of the public; and
• action designed to seriously interfere with or seriously to disrupt an electronic system.

I’ve come to realise that whilst AI makes dumb mistakes, so does the average person. And I fear the average person also ‘thinks’ as well as AI does. (Ie regurgitating half recalled things they’ve heard, with added randomness)

I was asked "What do other countries do about big money in politics?" Canada is a useful case study as their parliamentary system closely mirrors the UK's (for obvious reasons) - except they've totally clamped down on mega-donations.

Genuinely don’t think that was Foden lashing out. He was on his back feet in the air and just trying to get up. If you watch the replay he’s not even looking towards Bruno. I can see what it looks like but it’s 90% Bruno’s reaction that earns the red.

Based on the fact that this weekend one friend impulse purchased a second hand EV for £10k (she doesn’t know what make or model, it’s Chinese) & two other female friends have asked for advice on £10-15k second hand and new EVs (Dacia Spring etc), there’s a huge market for super cheap EV second cars.

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.
