Went to a conference today at the science centre where I started my career. I left there in 2012 & I've been back a few times since, but for some reason the hiraeth really hit me today & I really missed it. I even got a bit emotional using the same toilet I used to use back then. #toilethiraeth

I haven't finished it yet but it really is an excellent Bond novel. I can't recommend it enough. At one point Bond murders a load of henchmen while in the bollocky buff.

This is from Charlie Higson's new James Bond novel, King Zero. 007 says eat the rich!
Bond smiled politely. He'd heard enough of this kind of talk before to have had his fill of it.

It was the sort of self inflating blather that many rich and powerful men came out with - as if they'd got there by clever business decisions alone

He'd often thought about writing a very short book. Ten Secrets of Wealthy Men.

Yesterday, NASA broke a record. The longest distance travelled by a vehicle on the surface of a world other than Earth. The Perseverance rover has now driven 45.22 km, beating the previous record of 45.16 km by the Opportunity rover. Perseverance did the distance in 5.5 years to Oppy's 15.

I'm watching the Scooby Doo movie from 2002 and Sugar Ray have turned up. It's so weird how tattooed scumbags in vests with bleached spiky hair and ratty little chin beards feel like flower power, tie-dyed hippies now.

Seeing Bluesky reminisce about people who were big on Twitter 10 years ago but either got cancelled or went off the deep end makes me grateful that, even if I were funnier & more insightful, I am far too hyper-fixated on Superman comics to get any sort of significant social media fame.

Generative AI is for the kind of people who use terms like "comic accurate" and "source material" when they're critiquing a movie.

Reminder that generative AI is for the type of "fan" who would rather see a superhero wearing a mask with the eyes whited out than be surprised by a well crafted performance, and who will never settle for anything less than an exact recreation of their rose-tinted memories of being twelve.

An insight into how: 1. the prominence of far right discourse has lots of English people tying themselves in knots trying to figure out what being English means. 2. staying on Twitter after Musk took over has pushed prominent tweeters that I had forgotten existed into even darker places.

Social media algorithms, just stop it. I know I'm a balding, middle-aged man. I know young people have all collectively agreed that middle-aged men going bald is one of those things that it's still okay to be cruel about. But you are never, ever going to convince me to wear a toupee.

Watching Lanterns has reminded me how much I love Green Lantern comics and as a result I've been reading the Wein/Gibbons & Englehart/Staton runs and really enjoying them. What should I reread next? Morrison/Sharp? Johns? Silver Age? Or something else? What's the most recent run been like?

Red Dwarf 7, 8, and Back To Earth are so embarrassingly, amateurishly awful that I sometimes forget that series 1-6 are good enough to stand among the greatest British sitcoms ever made.

It's such an insight into his mind. I think he's locked in a teenage fantasy world and he's perpetually angry that the real world doesn't live up to it. He'd be exactly the kind of arsehole that I could identify with if it wasn't for the racism.

I've been listening to Morrissey's latest album and it's genuinely fascinating that the man who regularly complains that music critics are failed musicians who are personally attacking him with their reviews also wrote a song about how much he loves Lester Bangs.

Perfect ending to Lanterns. What a show. It would have been so easy to just rehash Secret Origin or Emerald Twilight, but instead they scraped off all the superficial details & found the core of who Hal & John are, and then put them in a Green Lantern story we have genuinely never seen before.
