Clear-eyed analysis from @blekhman.bsky.social on the future value and current limitations of AI in science. TLDR: we need to change systems to realize AI's promise blekhman.substack.com/p/why-ai-wil...
Outtake from linked article: When AI companies and prominent commentators claim that AI will dramatically accelerate science, university administrators hear that they can expect more output1from fewer people. Funders hear that AI might offset the cuts to NIH budgets that are currently suffocating the research enterprise. Trainees hear that reading deeply and analyzing carefully matter less than learning to prompt a model. All of these conclusions are wrong.

It's fantastic to see this finally published! Huge credit to @s-j-aitken.bsky.social and @mstaylor.bsky.social for their determination and creativity on this project, which went in many unexpected directions (with many people along for the ride) and way beyond the initial experimental questions

Look at the women at NASA. They are the ones pushing the boundaries of science, solving problems most people can’t even understand, and carrying this country forward, while our politicians right now posture and stumble through talking points. And they are doing it all with joy.👇

Saddened to hear of Phil Bourne's death. I first encountered him as chair of ISMB 2000 in San Diego at my first ever computational biology conference. He always pushed for open science and always tried to make things better. In both he made a positive difference news.virginia.edu/content/memo...

Crushed to hear of Mark Batzer’s passing. He was the Boyd Professor at Louisiana State University. His influential research revealed how mobile elements shape the genomes of humans & other mammals. Mark’s personality, generosity & positivity were larger than life. He lifted everyone up. HUGE loss 💔

Currently dorking out over this graph about child mortality with my brother. Just mind boggling to take in.
chart of child mortality in history, roughly 48% for all societies across the globe…until the 20th century, where it plummets to 4%

I’ve just read this pre-print and it’s fantastic. A conserved element with no endogenous enhancer activity is nonetheless necessary and sufficient for extreme long range enhancer action. Recommend to anyone interested in gene regulation

The use of the phrase “ancestry-specific variant” is increasing, particularly to describe rare Single-nucleotide variants (SNVs). But these alleles are not ancestry-specific. They have not yet been found elsewhere, but they will be. 1/n
