"My inescapable conclusion has become that Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinian people." Written by an Ivy League professor who studies the Holocaust; who served in the IDF. www.nytimes.com/2025/07/15/o...
My inescapable conclusion has become that Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinian people. Having grown up in a Zionist home, lived the first half of my life in Israel, served in the I.D.F. as a soldier and officer and spent most of my career researching and writing on war crimes and the Holocaust, this was a painful conclusion to reach, and one that I resisted as long as I could. But I have been teaching classes on genocide for a quarter of a century. I can recognize one when I see one.

We’re c.2004 in the crypto-banking nexus. Everyone thinks they’re a stable genius & society is hailing them as such. But eventually the tide will go out & the inevitable Buffett moment will be incredibly ugly & costly. It always is. Over & over & over again. We keep forgetting what we’ve learned.

I could be wrong about this but I really think most Americans do not want to be forced to “do their own research” about food & drug & product safety and would rather that the government agencies that have been sorting that all out for them for decades not be obliterated in the name of “efficiency.”

What @abenewman.bsky.social and I said back in 2019, right as stuff was beginning to kick off direct.mit.edu/isec/article...
When interdependence is used by privileged states for strategic ends, other states are likely to start considering economic networks in strategic terms too. Targeted states—or states that fear they will be targeted—may attempt to isolate themselves from networks, look to turn network effects back on their more powerful adversaries, and even, under some circumstances, reshape networks so as to minimize their vulnerabilities or increase the vulnerabilities of others.114 Hence, the more that privileged states look to take advantage of their privilege, the more that other states and nonstate actors will take action that might potentially weaken or even undermine the interdependent features of the preexisting system.115 The ability of states to resist weaponized interdependence will reflect, in part, their degree of autonomy from those economic interests that hope to maintain the benefits of centralized exchanges even in the face of greater constraints on state authority.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the contributors to the special issue & working with the framework to make the issue eclectic, rich yet also coherent.! Also, everyone involved in developing the idea at @europeanisa.bsky.social workshop that inspired and catalysed the issue.
110
Paul Beaumont @pauldavidbeaumont.bsky.social · 02/03/2025
Perhaps the most counter intuitive finding of the issue is highlighted by @bill wohlforth, that with seeking status symbols may be (reasonably) rational after all!
110
Paul Beaumont @pauldavidbeaumont.bsky.social · 02/03/2025
In other words, our contributors highlight latent potentialities and complexity of international status symbols that do not readily lend themselves to generalization but to overlook would impoverish IR’s understanding of status.
100
Paul Beaumont @pauldavidbeaumont.bsky.social · 02/03/2025
They dissect the historical–social conditions that have turned conceding sovereign authority into the symbol of high status, and conversely, identify how an international status symbol can become a domestic stigma. And much more besides.
100
Paul Beaumont @pauldavidbeaumont.bsky.social · 02/03/2025
We will do a proper thread on the whole issue soon but in short, we believe this approach has reaped dividends: The contributors unpack the multivocal meanings that generate the symbolism of opera houses and account for the inversion of Ottoman status symbols over the longue durée.
