New COVID variant that the super brainy kids are watching. It's growing quickly and has better ACE2 binding properties and could be more immune evasive than other variants that have been hanging around dominating the landscape lately. Please get your COVID vaccine and put on a respirator. 😷💉

A study of 154 professional singers found COVID-19 had lasting effects on vocal health. After recovering from COVID, 53% reported persistent vocal changes and 44% new throat clearing. Researchers found COVID more than doubled the risk of voice impairment, highlighting the need for post-COVID care.

An image showing page 3 of the Victorian Respiratory Surveillance Report, dated 4 September 2026, titled "Laboratory surveillance".
The page details "Case notifications" for respiratory illnesses in Victoria, Australia. Under "Notifications (last two weeks)" for the week ending 29 August 2026, it displays three visual blocks:
•	COVID-19: labeled "stable" with an orange horizontal arrow pointing right.
•	Influenza: labeled "33% increase" with a purple arrow pointing diagonally up.
•	RSV: labeled "10% decrease" with a blue arrow pointing diagonally down.
Under "Modelled current trends" by ACEFA (to 23 August 2026), it displays three matching blocks:
•	COVID-19: "Most likely stable" (51% probability case notifications were increasing), with a horizontal orange arrow.
•	Influenza: "Almost certainly increasing" (>99% probability case notifications were increasing), with an upward purple arrow.
•	RSV: "Almost certainly decreasing" (3% probability case notifications were increasing), with a downward blue arrow.
An image showing page 4 of the Victorian Respiratory Surveillance Report, dated 4 September 2026, focusing on "COVID-19".
The page features "Figure 1: COVID-19 notified cases by week, Victoria, 31 August 2025 to 29 August 2026." This orange bar chart illustrates weekly case numbers over a one-year period, showing a peak of over 600 cases in late 2025, a drop to around 200 in early 2026, a steady rise through mid-2026, and a recent high plateau fluctuating near 600 cases.
Below the chart, three summarized information cards note:
•	"There were 652 notified COVID-19 cases two weeks ago" (for the period 16 Aug 2026 to 22 Aug 2026).
•	"There were 628 notified COVID-19 cases last week" (for the period 23 Aug 2026 to 29 Aug 2026).

It features "Figure 3: Influenza notified cases by week, Victoria, 31 August 2025 to 29 August 2026." The stacked purple bar chart tracks weekly cases, broken down into Influenza A (light purple), Influenza B (medium purple), and Influenza A and B (dark purple). It reveals a high wave of over 3,000 cases in late 2025, dropping to very low levels from February to July 2026, followed by a sharp, sudden spike reaching nearly 3,000 cases in late August 2026.
Below the chart, nine data summary blocks display:
•	Influenza (overall): rose from 2,211 cases (16–22 Aug) to 2,944 cases (23–29 Aug), showing a 33% increase.
•	Influenza A: rose from 2,002 cases to 2,728 cases, showing a 36% increase.
•	Influenza B: remained relatively stable, shifting slightly from 208 cases to 216 cases.
An image showing page 7 of the Victorian Respiratory Surveillance Report, dated 4 September 2026, focusing on "Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)".
The page features "Figure 6: RSV notified cases by week, Victoria, 31 August 2025 to 29 August 2026." This blue bar chart tracks weekly infections. It shows cases declining from roughly 1,000 in late 2025 down to a low baseline near 150 cases from January through April 2026. A massive winter wave follows, peaking at over 1,500 weekly cases in July 2026, before steadily declining through August.
Below the chart, three data summary blocks state:
•	"There were 956 notified RSV cases two weeks ago" (for the period 16 Aug 2026 to 22 Aug 2026).
•	"There were 859 notified RSV cases last week" (for the period 23 Aug 2026 to 29 Aug 2026).

The Shot has the right to "self-defence"
The Shot has the right to “self-defence”

In Crikey, Sami Shah stated that The Shot is anti-Semitic, describing our masthead as “an attempt at a satirical site for people who found Facebook comments insufficiently moderated” and our work as “Practically demonstrations of antisemitism". Embarrassingly, in the same week, The Australian more accurately described us as “left-wing” and “probing the limits of law and language”.

Sami singled out two article headlines, The royal commission into the hurt feelings of genocidal psychopaths and Updates from the royal commission into the selective outrage of Zionists, which he clearly didn’t read before accusing us of sloppy “media criticism”. The headlines were mine, the body copy written by Joel Jenkins. They were no-bullshit, reality based tear downs of the fascistic assaults on our democracy, which all of us can see so plainly with our own eyes. Even liberal Zionist cowards like Shah.

During a mass slaughter that our government is supporting materially and diplomatically, it's not good enough to have segments of the indie media community trying to un-stretch the Overton Window back inside the borders set by decades of hasbara, horrifically biased and supremacist mass media, and the whims of the genocidal psychopaths. We don’t know how many Australians love milquetoast fence-sitting during atrocity, but Pew research shows that 80% of us despise Israeli atrocity and fascistic overreach into our democracies.

Description continued on next slide As a credo, I try to treat people with the same level of respect I am shown. We have done more serious analysis and investigative reporting on this depravity than Crikey has, a much larger outlet with more staff and resources. Over the years, The Sunday Shot has also platformed many Crikey writers. Needless to say, that moment has passed us by.

To make such petty remarks at some of the few unvarnished truth-tellers in Australian journalism on this subject, in this moment of abject moral failure, of cowardice and of complicity, speaks to the hollow pettiness of Shah’s analysis. Focus on what really matters, please.

There is enough genocide apologia in the corporate press already. It's pathetic to see it in the indie space, too. Do better, Crikey, your readers expect more.

Fuck fascism. Free Palestine.

Utterly heartbreaking. And at some point it’s going to start killing mammals in large numbers too. www.abc.net.au/news/2026-08...

I just cannot enjoy movies where America saves the world anymore. Whether it's the state, the military, the CIA. Even the superheroes are getting into mass surveillance and being friends with cops & billionaires. At best it's insulting, at worst it feels like a psy-op. I'm out.

Imagine being an ALP Minister of the NDIS and thinking it is good that the LNP "has been extremely constructive" in discussions over how to agree with you legislation to cut the NDIS

I asked why the NACC has apparently never looked into billions in sketchy secret Nauru contracts, the answer was simple: nobody could explain it.

NACC claims it clears complaints in 90 days. That stat only counts the ones they've finished not the backlog still sitting there. This pattern of using numbers designed to flatter, not inform has too often characterised what is supposed to be our integrity watchdog!

Yesterday I showed how global sea ice cover has taken a rapid tumble, so here's a closer look at that change in #Antarctic sea ice. It's currently the 2nd lowest extent on record for the date. See more at zacklabe.com/antarctic-se.... Data from @nsidc.bsky.social.
Line graph time series of 2026's daily Antarctic sea ice extent compared to 1981-2010 climatological statistics. The graph shows the seasonal cycle, and ice-free conditions are indicated at 1 million square kilometers. Sea ice is currently below average for mid August.
