My new Patriots salary cap space number after today's signing of Da'Metrius Weatherspoon is $5,811,618 - a $206,250 decrease from yesterday's update. $206,250 = Da'Metrius Weatherspoon's salary. He will be making $13,750 on a weekly basis. Reminder - players are paid for the bye week.
$301,200,000 (Official 2026 League Cap) Plus
$47,274,868 (2025 Carryover) Plus
$4,504,386 (LTBE/NLTBE and Guaranteed Salary Offset Adjustment)
Equals
$357,079,254 (2026 Patriots Projected Adjusted Cap Number) Minus
$43,125,556 (Dead Money. 12.2176% of Patriots adjusted cap number)
Minus
$57,103,496 (Medical - IR/PUP/Injury Settlements) - 16.178% of the Patriots adjusted cap number
Minus
$4,839,744 (Practice Squad)
Minus
$242,098,840 (Total Active Roster Cap Commitments)
Equals
$5,811,618 (Patscap's Projected 2026 Patriots Cap Space Number)

$335,365,128 = Patriots Cash Spending Excluding Unearned Incentives
Patriots Cash Spending to League Cap Ratio = 111.34%

Note I have removed the unearned active roster bonuses (Julian Hill, Harold Landry, Brenden Schooler, Carlton Davis, Mike Onwenu, Dre'Mont Jones, and Greg Van Roten) from the above cash spending number. Please also note I have almost removed any guaranteed salary that has been offset from the cash spending total. Example - I am not including Stefon Diggs' $1.7M salary in my cash spending total since it was offset by his Commanders compensation.

I have the Patriots 2026 effective salary cap space number as a negative $2,428,853 after projecting these future expenses

$1.1M for Practice Squad players elevations
$4,880,471 for earned NLTBE active roster bonuses.
$1.26M for Antonio Gibson's Injury Protection
$1M to replace injured players

I expect the Patriots to create cap season sometime during the season

But of course they couldn't be patient, because no one is patient in the NFL. So they screwed themselves on both ends. They just proved the reason they never should have drafted him in the first place.

For starters, they never should have drafted a developmental QB in the top 10. It almost never works because no one has the patience to develop QBs. But once they did, they needed to commit to his development. He's talented and it could work out. Hell, he's still younger than a bunch of college QBs

The JJ McCarthy trade highlights everything that is wrong with the NFL and QB development. The Vikings drafted a 21-year-old QB who played in a limited passing offense in college. Everyone knew he wasn't a finished product and needed time to develop. So naturally they gave up after 10 bad starts

It was also supposed to be a big A.J. Brown area. But there's a difference between not getting more out of those throws and them not existing at all. Among qualified quarterbacks, only Marcus Mariota has fewer throws to that part of the field and he had two yesterday.

One area where it feels like Drake Maye's lack of confidence pops up is throws to the intermediate middle of the field, which don't exist this year. Maye had the seventh-most passes of 11-19 air yards between the numbers last season. He has three this season. Can see the void in his passing map.
