In rehab, “quiet hours” are the wee small pockets of time at the end of another long and psychologically taxing day—a time for meditation and relaxation and sleep, but one that often leaves recovering addicts alone with their own roiling thoughts. In his startling and memorable new collection Quiet Hours, Patrick Trotti explores the dark corners of these thoughts and emotions, in stories redolent with the scent of booze, smoke, and sex. Many of these pieces unfold as pas-de-deux between two characters, with the actions and often catastrophic decisions of each reverberating and echoing within the other: in “Spare,” a man and a woman sit uneasy in their sobriety after an AA meeting; in “Dive,” a robbery at a dive bar turns disastrous; in “Turbulence,” an estranged couple embark on an ill-fated flight in a desperate attempt to save their marriage. From this orbit of addicts and thieves, burnouts and hard cases, Trotti mines moments of glittering emotional clarity and blind hope, writing with clear-eyed empathy while steadily ratcheting up the tension, setting his characters on collision courses with monolithic moments of choice that demand not that they do “the next right thing,” but the first.
